Saw this at a sneak preview last night.
There were things I really liked, and things I really didn't. We get to see Indy well into the 1950s, where Nazis are replaced with Commies. I didn't know Karen Allen was even going to be in this one, so it was kind of cool to see her reprise the role of Marion. It was definitely action packed, fast paced, and exciting.
That said, there was a lot that disappointed. First of all, the CGI was terrible. It took me out of the movie in several parts. Especially knowing what's possible these days after seeing Iron Man and Transformers, it was disappointing to see pre-Jurassic Park style CGI. I guess when I was a kid 20 years ago and first saw the others (holy shit, has it been that long?) I was less cynical and critical of the reality factor, but I think this one just went overboard into the hokie sci-fi realm. And the last 5-10 minutes snowballed exponentially cheesier and cheesier until it was almost unbearable. I was almost at my limit when Indy expounds with the corny "Knowledge is the real treasure" crap pushing it over the edge. And if Sha LaBeouf would have put that fucking hat on his head at the end, my not-so-great rating would have been dramatically worse.

Good review.  I was looking forward to seeing this movie, being a big fan of the originals (yes it's been 20 years)...thanks for the heads up...I'd rather not waste the time or money now.

Let us know what you think...I hope there's no leftist, Holly-weird, moralizing and/or political statement(s) in it.  There's nothing more tiresome to me than that.  For example, I thought that "The Kingdom" was a really good movie...up until the dumb-ass, moral equivalence "lesson" in the last 4 minutes...really disappointing.

Okay, I'm going to keep this brief as not to spoil the movie....

Lost is the charm of the earlier 1930's in the movie, as it takes place in the late 1950's now.   Some of the characters are now gone and you're left with a now much older Indiana Jones carrying the baggage of his past the entire movie.   Because it's Harrison Ford, you find yourself tolorating it, and you get past it as the plot "thickens" and the action scurries along.   However, in my opinion, gone also was the really tough grinding, or revolutionary ways of finding artifacts and clues that made you sit up in your seat in the first three movies.  There's clues and fact finding, but no real brainbusters, or boobie trapped fiasco that made the other movies rivetting and funny at times.

Indiana flirts with the past, has added a new 20 years of history behind where you left him, and where he is now, so be ready for a whole new background beyond his teaching years.   

As for "CGI", I think George Lucas tried to keep it looking like the feel of the older Jones movies and I didn't feel it really distracted from the movie.  If you "get it" that it's a George Lucas film, it won't bother you.   Yes, if you're looking for cutting edge CGI, you might be a little slighted.

As for the conclusion, I'd offer that this is a series closer in that there are loose ends tied up, some in "cheesier" ways than others, and Lucas makes this Indiana Jones a "Lucas Film Medley" of sorts.  You'll figure that out when you see it.

If you're a fan of the series, I'd recommend going to see it while you can in a theater.  After all, it's a George Lucas film, and it goes out big.   If you're just curious, Blu Ray will be out in 6-8 months.

I guess I don't "get it". The CGI was worse here than in the last Star Wars trilogy. Hell it's better in Mucinex commercials. I thought I was in the wrong theater, and was instead watching Alvin & The Chipmunks based on that first shot of the groundhog. The monkeys? The vehicle to vehicle swordfight? (Which otherwise would have been awesome)
And I don't buy they were trying to match the feel of the old films. Where was the CGI in those? The ONLY CGI I can remember from the whole series is the dude's face melting off in Last Crusade, and even THAT looked better than the crap in this movie.

At the first of the movie, if the box was so magnetic, how did they slide it into the back of the truck? How did they ever get it out?

my take on the movie, and i have always been a big fan of the Indiana movies: 

my wife nudged me 3 times to wake me up through the coarse of the movie, and we went to the 6:30 p.m. showing. 

bottom line for me, the story mixes a little too much sci-fi for an adventure movie.
