Problem?  Maybe.  Not very flattering.

http://coachesbythenumbers.com/ted-roof-and-the-art-of-failing-up/

His W/L record at Duke is meaningless with regard to running a defense, but you can't argue with the fact that if he's anywhere near a defense, they're getting shredded.

At Minn.: Nat. Rank (Conf. Rank) Scoring Def. 61 (6), Total Def. 80 (10).

His best, as far as I can tell was 2001 at Ga Tech, where he had the 37th ranked scoring Def, and yet gave up 30 plus points in four games, 40 plus once, and the only teams they held to 10 points or less were Duke, Citidel, Navy and Syracuse.

Fuck me running...I don't recall too many people bitching about Roof's hire, but this record

Ted Roof teams since 2001:

Given up 30 or more points 55 times
Given up 40 or more points 29 times
Giving up 29.7 points/game on average
Giving up 400 yards/game on average
    Average national scoring rank (82)
    Average scoring conference rank (9)

Fuck!  Chiz screwed the pooch on this decision.  He must fix it!

At Auburn, Roof has held the following teams to under 20 points:

2009
LA Tech (13)

2010
Miss St (14)
LA Monroe (3)
LSU (17)
South Carolina (17)
Oregon (19)

2011

Since talent and youth are considered valid excuses, let's look at Dan Mullen's Miss State teams in the same time frame.  What teams have they held under 20 points?

2009
Jacksonville St (7)
Vanderbilt (3)
Middle Tennessee St (7)

2010
Memphis (7)
Auburn (17)
Georgia (12)
Alcorn ST (16)
Florida (7)
Kentucky (17)
Michigan (14)

2011
Memphis (14)
LSU (9)

Yup, just like that....but make it count by drilling him into the fucking ground, knocking his helmet off in the process, then use his face to help you get off the ground.

Yeah that was the thing that caught my attention from the link, I don't really care what he did as the head man at Duke.

I don't know where you find the stats and I am too lazy to google them, but I wonder what it was like before 2001?  He was DC at GT in 99 and 00, and I think he did a stint somewhere else too?

He was up for the Broyles at GT.

I found the problem. He started his career at Alabama as a GA. Left Alabama to coach LBs at the actual West Georgia.

It may just be speculation on my part, but I think the Roof hire was just as much about recruiting lights out in Georgia as it was about coaching. Roof and Rock had Georgia locked down the last 3 years. IMHO, its not worth it to have him. Plenty of good Defensive coaches out there who can also recruit well.

Recruiting was why Knox was kept around, and our WRs were hard pressed to ever catch a pass.  And, I understand why you'd hire a guy to be a recruiter, and not so much for his coaching skills.  But IF Chiz hired him for that, then HE has to run the defense for real, and let Roof be the DC in name only.

Totally agree.

Best thing to do now is leave Roof as DC in name only and have Chiz at least halfway get the D to par for the rest of this season. Enough to keep up in a few games at least. Let Roof go after last game or after NSD, and hire a new, young DC. I like Boise's.
