See I'm with you on this one but I am constantly told that that's not how it's taught now.  You play face to the receiver now.  I don't agree with it but that's what everyone keeps telling me how it's taught now.

I don't like it either, but there is no face guarding in college. You don't have to look back for the ball like you do in the pros.

I watch the NFL, I love the NFL.  8 out of 10 cornerbacks turn around and look for the ball.  The other 2 suck ass and currently play for Kansas City.

You can't face guard in the pros. It is an automatic PI penalty. There is no such thing as a face guarding penalty in college.

Never played defensive back except in The McGhee Estates Bowl (David Dunbars back yard), where I dominated in neighborhood football.  If a receiver sprinted down the sidelines ( azalea bushes ) I'd run stride for stride and look back for the ball and try to intercept or knock it away before he caught it and got in the endzone (Between the two pecan trees).

    *

Face guarding in the NFL is the act of trying to block the vision of a receiver from being able to see the football when attempting to catch a pass.

Legality

    *

There are rules in the NFL against pass interference, but there are no such rules against face guarding. A defender can block a receiver's view of the ball with any part of his body.

When Face Guarding Becomes Pass Interference

    *

If the defender makes physical contact with a receiver while trying to block his view of the football before the ball arrives, that is considered pass interference. The penalty is for pass interference, not for face guarding.

Misconceptions

    *

Considering face guarding is not a penalty, a defender does not have to be "looking for the ball" when breaking up a pass for the receiver. Instead, he just needs to make sure he makes no physical contact at all with the receiver before the ball arrives.

Huh...I guess I am wrong. Where did you find that? I could have sworn you couldn't put your hands up in the NFL, without looking for the ball, even if you don't touch the WR. I guess not...

some ramblings...

My philosophy is if you can get away with it on the field, DO IT!

Face guard, tip elbows, step on feet, to the head, I don't give a shit, just stop them.

Note: Step on feet is a real winner in the red zone.

Man coverage is in their face three yards off the line step for step...I haven't seen that.

I've calmed down some after a day of reflection. Don't want firings and handing somebody a bunch of money isn't gonna fix the problem. Physical practices this week are needed. Physical practices before the Clemson game makes your team look like it came off a short week. See MSU v. LSU. We played twenty minutes of Auburn football Saturday.

We didn't see enough of Dyer which would eat time and give the D a breather.
Ben Tate would have run the motherfucker thirty-five or forty times if we needed it.
Like I say...Gus knows what he's doing.

Is Lutz okay?
Benton made a meaningful catch. Still need help beyond Blake to loosen things up for the full effect.
