100% agreeance.

I'm not saying he's Chizik-as-a-DC level, I'm just sayin that defensive performance was a huge improvement over last week. Now's not the week to be saying we should fire him mid-season.

If you look at two years at Iowa State and two years and two games here?  Chizik isn't producing Chizik-as-a-DC level results.

Again, I'm not bitching because the fucking defense was on the field 92 plays.  some of that was their fault.  But when you need the offense to get one fucking first down to drain the clock and they go three and out and use up less than a fucking minute?   Shit.

Offensive Plays:
MSU - 93
AU - 54

That's almost a 40 play swing with a defense that's still fucking wet behind the ears.  What does the arrogant fucking prick mullen like to run? Dives, Misdirections, up the gut type runs with a sledgehammer at RB and a sledgehammer at QB...then he runs the option with LaDarius Perkins (former Auburn commit)...then he goes back to the gut runs.  All this after our Offense has gone three and out twice in a row. When we have them at 3rd and 11 (passing situations), they run a misdirection QB up the Gut with their 6'4" 245lb sledgehammer. If MSU had taken Auburn to OT, Auburn would've probably lost the game.

LSU & uat will crush MSU, because MSU Offensive style plays right into both of those team's strengths. Auburn is not strong in the front four, yet..they will be eventually (probably taked another year). Which is why I stated that our run defense isn't going to be great.

We will lose games due to that fact. For everyone saying that Auburn is going to go 7-5/8-4 how do you see Auburn losing those games? I tell you one way we wont lose those games and that will be lack of effort, this team will fight until the final whistle. The Defense will continue to grow, as they grow they'll continue to get better and they'll continue to get stronger the longer they play together as one unit. This is not the final product on Defense or Offense....and yes the Offense affects the Defense and vice-versa.

I saw something different Saturday.  I saw a DL that was not getting pushed around and LB's that were starting to make plays.  When you do not have a Fairley (as most do not) then the job of the DL is to clog holes and allow LB's to make plays.
I feel much better about the defense than what I did a week ago.

The biggest concern I had after the game was the 3rd down defense.  Most teams on 3rd and long will dial up a nice blitz...I may have seen a blitz once or twice, and there were quite a few 3rd and long situations.  I'm not sure if that is the coordinator scared to see his young'ns give up the big play or just piss poor game management.

It still bothered me that our DE's (or end person on the line) is not coming up and making the qb pitch and subsequently pay the price for running an option.  That is a free opportunity to knock the fuck out of the qb and get him hearing footsteps the rest of the day.

This.  They danced with Relf all day on the option and never covered the pitch man.

That's not their job.   On an option their job is to dance with Relf.  To stay inside him and force him down the line.  They're not supposed to give ground and are supposed to work laterally down the line and force Relf to either pitch or cut back into their tackle, but they're not supposed to bull rush and hit him in the mouth.  It's all about decisions.

Relf's job is to read the DE.  If they drift to his outside toward the pitch, he's supposed to funnel back inside where there will be an open lane.  If they stay in containment he's supposed to make the pitch.

I haven't seen film obviously, but I think the frustration with the DEs is misplaced.  They were supposed to have outside support from a LB or a safety.  I don't think we got that.

Our LB's are getting pushed around a good bit. I do see Sanis point though. The DE does cover the QB and it is a free shot to get the QB thinking.

I seriously wish the coaches would put Craig Sanders out OLB.

You don't have a free shot.  That's what I'm saying.  If you're the DE covering the QB and you lunge upfield to take your shot, you've fucked the caboose right then and there.  The only way you can do that is if you know for 10000% certain that you've got somebody (or two somebodies) covering the pitch guy and know for 90% sure that the DE on the other side is pursuing backside and no deeper than the deepest back to nullify the potential for a sneaky reverse type pitch to a WR.

Goal is to work down the line of scrimmage, not give ground and string it out.  At least that's the way I learned it.

I guess the original point though was if the end is responsible for stringing the play toward the sideline..and hopefully someone is coming up for the pitch man....then the DE should always at least give the QB a shot in the chops once the QB commits either way.

I dont like the way the DEs were coached to play the option.

Quote
Stat of the week

If I had to take someone to Vegas with me, I just might select Gene Chizik. All he seems to do is give heart attack to the Auburn faithful and win last second games. The Tigers pulled off the upset this week against Mississippi State thanks to a goal line stand that kept quarterback Chris Relf out of the end zone by inches to preserve a 41-34 win at home.

"We'd prefer to win football games a lot different than we are, but there's something to be said when you can fight down to the end when it doesn't look good and still win the game," Chizik said after the game.

While the head coach certainly would prefer a less stressful ending to games, he might need to get used to them if his team is to keep winning. After taking nearly two hours just to play the first half against the Bulldogs, I was digging around looking for the total game time but managed to find an even more eye-popping stat.

Auburn's offense has averaged 56.5 plays during their first two games while the defense has averaged 90.5 snaps per game. Yes, the defense is almost literally on the field twice as long the offense. For a young team with issues on both sides of the ball, that's an uh-oh.

For comparison's sake, Arkansas has averaged 74.5 plays on offense and 57.5 on defense during their light non-conference schedule. Only two SEC teams have average more than 70 snaps on defense, and just six teams nationally have their defense on the field for more than 80 plays a game. No one even approaches 90 defensive plays a game. The national average for number of plays on defense is 67.3 and 68.8 on offense.

Up against that little issue, it's almost shocking Auburn's 2-0 but they are thanks to some late game heroics. Whether this is a serious flaw of just the byproduct of two crazy games remains to be seen but, bottom-line, Chizik needs to make some adjustments.

Hell maybe I was taught wrong but back in the olden days of my ball playing days, If I read option I closed down the line as quickly as I could, made the pitch happen before it was supposed to and made the qb pay for it.  Maybe the difference is that I had a guy playing corner on my side that I knew would have the pitch man.  We would only have folks try to option our side a couple of time a game because they payed the price if they did.
