AU plans repair of eagle statue's busted beak

Plans are in the works to repair one of two concrete eagle statues marking the entrance to the Auburn University campus at Toomer’s Corner, said Mike Clardy, AU director of communications and marketing.

The beak of the sculpture on the West Magnolia side of the entrance was damaged at some point over the weekend, according to a report from the Auburn Police Division. The broken piece was found near the pillar the eagle is perched atop and was later turned over to the AU Facilities Division personnel.

So far, no one has come forward with any information as to how the statue was damaged, Clardy said on Wednesday. “You have so many people up there over the weekend, there’s just really no way of telling,” he said.

Clardy said no immediate timetable for the repair of the statue has been set.

“The university is looking for some specialty contractors who perform restoration work, and once we find the contractor, we’ll have them make the repairs,” Clardy said. “This is more involved than just putting concrete on the broken area and hoping it sticks. We think it’s worth taking the time to do it right and make sure it stays there for years to come.”

While both Auburn University and the city of Auburn maintain webcams that are trained on Toomer’s Corner, neither has provided any evidence yet as to how the statue was damaged.

“The university has one camera that points toward Toomer’s Corner. The city of Auburn has another one,” said Clardy. The AU webcam is set up for marketing, he said, not security purposes.

Authorities have not requested footage from the city’s camera at Toomer’s Corner, said Assistant City Manager/CIO James Buston. “The police have not asked us for any footage from that webcam,” he said.

The city of Auburn’s six webcams positioned throughout the community record approximately a week of footage before it is overwritten, Buston said.

It would seem to me that it would be extremely unlikely that could be done by accident.

You have kids and people crawling and climbing all over those things constantly before, during and after the games.  It is actually HIGHLY likely that it was done by accident.

Damn you Harvey Updick.

However, it was extremely windy all weekend with that system moving through.  Could have been a limb or something blown at it.  Could have been Sani.  He loves the statue.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

This season sucks already!  We nearly get beat by the Aggies, another bunch of Aggies are joining our conference, OUR STATUE'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!

Maybe we can sell it to this kid.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

Sani could be guilty of a lot of stuff but harming a eagle is not one of them.
