Auburn's Tre Mason is SEC co-freshman of week

AUBURN, Alabama -- Tre Mason made quite a splash in his first college game last Saturday by returning a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

The SEC noticed and named him Monday the league's co-freshman of the week with Alabama linebacker Trey DePriest.

Mason had 176 yards on four kickoff returns in Auburn's 42-38 win over Utah State. His total is tied for the third most in school history.

Mason said he had a good road to the touchdown.

"I saw everybody do their assignment, and when everybody does their assignment, the hole opens up and I just hit it and go. I told them I wasn't coming back," Mason said.

It also brought Auburn partially back from a 21-7 deficit.

"That was definitely my aim with that return. I knew if I did that, it would pick up the energy for the defense and offense and everybody," Mason said.

There will be another SEC weekly winner at Jordan-Hare Stadium this Saturday. Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard will be there after being named the offensive player of the week after rushing for 166 yards and three touchdowns against Memphis last week. LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu was named the league's defensive player of the week. He had 10 tackles against Oregon last Saturday.

Arkansas' Joe Adams was named the special teams player of the week, Rokevious Watkins of South Carolina was named the top offensive lineman, Jaye Howard of Florida and Luke McDermott of Kentucky were named the top defensive linemen.

Alabama's DePriest had a team-best 10 tackles against Kent State.

Trey Depriest had only 10 tackles, that's with playing on the kickoff coverage team...Jake Holland had 11 tackles and didn't have the extra opportunity on the ko coverage team to get more tackles.  But yet, everyone wants to blast Holland in his first game to start and call the plays.

People aren't blasting, just commenting.  There were several plays where he looked lost.  Pointing around and not paying attention as the ball was snapped.

Yes, people are blasting him and his father.  It was on the Bunker, I hope it got deleted. I agree he did look lost out there a few times, one time he was looking to the sidelines as the ball was snapped, I'm not sure if it was the coaching staff making defensive changes or what...but that will be corrected before this upcoming weekend.

Not me...I say we use it.  Make the offense think that we aren't ready, when in reality we actually are....have the entire defense looking at the sidelines, then when the ball is snapped, see ball hit ball.
