MacElroy The Problem?
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:24:14 AM »
I've been doing extensive, in-depth research on the upcoming season...and as I was reading my Lindy's preseason mag whilst perched atop the crapper....I read the section they always have where opposing coaches make comments about that particular team.  Anonymously, of course.  On Bama, one coach said the whole difference in the 09' and 10' Bama teams was the play of MacElroy.  He said the guy was solid in 09' but just wasn't good at all last year.  Went on to say if they even had someone like Hartline from Kentucky, they might have won it all again.

I tend to disagree to an extent because I think the O-line was a bit overrated and could get pushed around at times, especially in the losses they had.  But, if QB really is the key for this team, how does that figure in with MCCarron and Sims (sp? on both) for this year?  Resident Bammies, do you think QB is the key and if so, how do either of these guys compare to what you had last year?

I don't think McElroy was the problem at all.  I think he was one of the only guys out there trying.

The problem came with play calling.  Fumbles.  Missed catches.

Trent Richardson was a few feet from scoring against LSU.  He also missed a catch against Auburn.

Ingram/Richardson both did jack squat against South Carolina.

The offensive line was sloppy and was pushed around by opponents too often.

The secondary gave up way too many big plays.  Long passes were completed for scores by South Carolina (Jeffery), LSU (Randle), and Auburn (Zachary).

Maybe McElroy's leadership in the lockerroom turned guys off, but his on the field play was no different than 2009.

I think the problem was the hems on their suit trousers were too long.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

You could be on to something there.  Wonder if there's a good tailor around T-Town?

Play calling could have a lot to do with it.  The conservative run first and play action pass has always been my favorite but to many teams have opened it up on offense, forcing you to score a good bit more.  As for MacElroy, I agree THS.  I think his play was basically the same but in those big games like USCe and Auburn, his line didn't get the job done.  He had great stats in 09' but when was he getting his T'Sharvin Bell wrung?

Yeah, McElroy dresses left and everyone else dresses right, except Julio who dresses to both sides, and that threw everyone's rhythm off...

I think Opie McMiddlefinger was a liability for them last year, but not entirely for his play. The boy was too full of himself. He was always erratic when pressure was applied; all you had to do is pop him once and the offense went to shit.

After the Duke game, when the fluff articles began to flood the papers and BSPN about him being a "field general" and "game manager" - rather than an above adequate quarterback, it became apparent that he allowed it to go to his head. He became too cocky and arrogant and, to me, it showed in his performance. Don't get me wrong, a cocky QB can be a very good thing, but arrogance will kill a team quicker than anything.

With the weapons the updykes had last season, all this dunderhead had to do is hand it off to either the fast or to the furious or chunk it up to Juicio or Hanks, and they're looking at their second straight undefeated season. Instead, he tried too hard to be that mythical monster the media tried to make of him and he fell flat on his ass and took the team down with him.

McElroy's problem stemmed from him being gay.  Not that there's anything wrong with that or anything, but in the games when they weren't producing you'd see him complaining, bitching, crying, being all PMS(y)...that tends to rub off on others after a while.

I do not feel it was the QB's fault we lost a few last year or the reason we won it all the year before. Look at your team last year. Great O-line, no injuries, a little luck and a never give up attitude. Alabama looked the same the year before. I am going to say it even if we had Cam last year we would have a lost a few games. Our O-line did not play well, people were hurt and we were not very lucky. All those things add up to a few losses.

Who you been talking to, Joe Schad?

I do agree though, many close games. Not meant for the faint of heart.

The Iron Bowl was a microcosm of allbarn's season.

What?  In that we had the ability to fuck around for a half, then manhandle whoever we pleased and make them like it?  I agree.  Fact is, the 2010 Auburn Tigers were the poster child for how a team is supposed to gradually get better.  And they got better both on the field, and in the coaching.  The coaches had to learn along the way what they had, what they didn't have, and use the strengths and minimize the weaknesses.

As for McGinger?  He was part of the problem I guess.  I noticed he held the ball too long, which, in my opinion was a product of overconfidence in the ability of his OL from the year prior.  They weren't as good last year, and thus, McGinger wasn't either.  Was he the problem?  Well, in so far as he failed to adjust his game to what they could and couldn't do...yeah.
