Something to actually be worried about
« on: July 15, 2011, 08:19:58 AM »
Auburn's October.
Oct. 1    at South Carolina
Oct. 8    at Arkansas
Oct. 15    FLORIDA
Oct. 22    at LSU
Oct. 29    OLE MISS

That's tough sledding, folks.

September is Utah Sacrifice, MissStake, @AuburnwithaLake, and Florida Schnellenberger.

What do you all think is reasonable record by the break in November? I think 5-4 is doable with some challenges.

You describe 5-4 as doable? As in best case scenario? You are just as negative as I remembered.

5-4 is POSSIBLE, borerline worst case...6-2 is doable and 5-3 is realistic in my mind. I'm on record as predicting a 8-4, 9-3 season depending on the breaks.

You are just as negative as I remembered.

Doable as in automatic without knowing more about the offense or defense or seeing a down of football. Auburn's at worst case 5-4 I think.

Predicting this season to be disastrous for Auburn has become daily sport in some circles.

The same folks (plus others) predicted Chizik would fail because of his ISU record.  WRONG...National Champions bitches!

Many predicted Chris Todd would suck in 2009 because of the 2008 fiasco.  WRONG...Set Auburn Passing records.

I wrote last preseason that I basically thought we barely had SEC level talent at the defensive tackle position.  WRONG...Zach Clayton drafted, and Nick Fairley wins Lombardi Award.

Many, including me, had trepidation about Cam coming in at QB.  Some idiots would rationalize "wasn't Kodi supposed to be the next great QB at Auburn" as if that made any difference, but most weren't really expecting great things.  WRONG....Heisman.

Most believe that Freshmen can't be counted on in the SEC.  WRONG.  Michael Dyer was certainly highly rated as a recruit, but he fucking broke the Auburn Fr. rushing record at Auburn (Running Back U) that has stood since one of the greatest to ever play college football set it nearly 30 years ago.

And I don't give a shit who puffs their chest out to post "I wasn't one of those naysayers!"  Some were.

It's certainly reasonable to predict falloff from a National Championship team that graduated twenty something Seniors, plus lost a Heisman and Lombardi winner to the draft.  Fuck, we watch recruiting because great players make great teams.  You can't win with shitty players.  We've recruited well the last 2 seasons.  We'll be young, and in some places lacking experience, but that doesn't mean we will suck.

The fact that there are questions to be answered doesn't automatically mean the answers will be bad.  It does mean there are questions, and thus predicting October before Sept. has been played...Meh, have your fun, I'll wait and see after Sept. has played out.

I was freaking out about the schedule to, but then THS had this to say.  Yeah, we're starting a brand new OL.  I totally forgot we did the same thing in 2007.

He says it much better than I could hope to.

56 Days

Counting down to football is a long, dry, frustrating process.

One stint of excitement is quickly squashed when you realize there's almost two months worth of 100 degree temperatures left.

Speaking of difficult stretches of time, have you seen Auburn's schedule for October?

@South Carolina
@Arkansas
Florida
@LSU
Ole Miss

That may be the toughest 5 game stretch in the entire country.  Although, we don't really know yet as all five of those teams could be terrible this year.

But nonetheless, the fact that 3/4 games will involve travelling makes matters very difficult for Auburn.

How has Auburn faired in similar stretches of torture in recent history?

In 2005, Auburn faced the following October/November with no bye weeks involved:

@Arkansas
@LSU
Ole Miss
@Kentucky
@Georgia
Alabama

Auburn's record through that stint?  5-1.

In 2007, Auburn faced this in late September/October with no bye weeks involved:

@Florida
Vanderbilt
@Arkansas
@LSU
Ole Miss

Auburn's record through that gauntlet?  4-1.  (Remember how young that offensive line was?)

I'm not saying October will be no big deal.  On preseason paper, it looks much more difficult than those previous schedules.

But let's not act like it's a nail in Auburn's coffin this season.

Trying to predict anything this early is useless. I mean, it's fun for some offseason banter, but see: Alabama 2009, Auburn 2010. Without seeing a down of football, it's nothing to get butthurt over if somebody predicts something great or horrible.

Agree.

This type of shit doesn't even ruffle my feathers. Maybe fun to point out how idiotic some are who state these predictions as if they're iron clad fact, like the have the Back To The Future II Sports Almanac, and anyone who dares say Auburn may have a winning season at 7-5 gets laughed off a radio show.

The "experts" are way off base in predicting Auburn's record preseason infinitely more often than they are right.

I actually like when they predict us to fail so gloriously. Makes the otherwise mediocre 7-5 to 9-3 season look shockingly amazing. They'll be wrong, yet again, and their memories will be wiped the following year and they'll repeat the mistake.

I reserve my butthurtedness over lies being masqueraded as fact by the media concerning Auburn cheating scandals.
