Everyone knew that Al Capone was guilty of murder and robbery and extortion and prostitution and dozens of other crimes. But the Capone gang was as adept at hiding the guilt as it was in its perpetration. Finally, though, the Feds got Capone in an area where he hadn't covered up: tax evasion. He died in prison of syphilis.

The comparison is a college football program that everyone knows has been dirty for decades and which recently bought and paid for a star player. The only ones who don't believe it are part of "the family," the ironic name also used by crime syndicates. It has looked for months as though the family was going to get away with it again, because it has perfected the art of covering up its cheating and stonewalling any cooperation into investigation. Now rumor has it that while the buying players crime may have been covered up, NCAA investigators have found something else -- the so-called "tax evasion." And with it they have found the cover-up.
