The White House Called Who? And Said WHAT?!?

Ok...so a person on live TV called Obama a dickhead or something.  I get it.  That's not appropriate for cable television, and if MSNBC wants to fire the guy, that's their prerogative. 

So this story is all good until I hit one section. 

This section:

White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Thursday afternoon that he called Halperin’s bosses at MSNBC.

“The comment that was made was inappropriate,” Carney told reporters in his daily briefing. “It would be inappropriate to say that about either president of either party.”

The White House is making calls to news organizations to tell them what they can and cannot say?  Is that freedom of press?
