I listened to this guy on Finebaum one afternoon babbling and gasping for air up against a break. Even Pawwl was perplexed. Brook's desperately needs Finebaum's blessing for relevance and thinks whatever he uncovers is worthy of a sting operation.

Brooks Melchior, the real name behind the vitriol on the SportsByBrooks web site, breathlessly exposed that some Auburn Tigerettes had been paid in the past two years. A real reporter, of course, would have done some minimal research and discovered that they were not paid for their work as Tigerettes but for various budgeted student jobs.

But to call Melchior a reporter is like calling me skinny. You can say it, but it doesnâ€™t make it so.

Instead, Melchior wrote a long piece about some Auburn Tigerettes getting paid and that some of them became Facebook friends with a former recruit after he enrolled in school. He dug out some old quotes and pretended he had a scoop.

Melchior, no doubt, would say that he wrote nothing in the piece that wasnâ€™t true. But he did exactly what set out to do. He gave the impression that the Tigerettes had done something wrong.

He didnâ€™t have to say it. The comments on the story said it for him. Thatâ€™s the way he works.

Innuendo is Melchiorâ€™s stock in trade. Truth? Accuracy? Context? Not so much.

Itâ€™s bad when the target is a big-time college quarterback, but big-time college quarterbacks are accustomed to being on the big stage, even accustomed to being criticized.

Itâ€™s bad when itâ€™s a coach, but coaches are paid well enough to take it.

But when Melchior takes off after female college students about whom he knows nothing, resulting in faceless, gutless message board posters calling them prostitutes and worse, thatâ€™s a new low.

All of us have, at one time or another, written stories that hurt people. Some of us have empathy for those who are hurt.

And then there are those who just donâ€™t care.

I have a confession to make. While at school at Auburn I got paid...by the school...(choke, sob)... to paint ...(Oh God have mercy on me)..the ATHLETIC DORMS...(waaaahhhhh!!!). For this service I was paid....(sniffle)...minimum wage.

I'm sorry that I took money from Auburn for a service rendered to said institution. I'm even sorrier that I spilled paint on that 6'6" 325lb offensive lineman's carpet and blamed it on another guy who had just left (actually that was pretty funny).

I really can't believe anyone would jump from the fact that some football hostesses are also on the payroll to the conclusion that they are paid prostitutes being paid by the school is really disgusting.

People get nervous when they call in to the radio. It's easier said than done. These sociopaths that call in every day like it's the WWF do it with ease, but it's understandable that a first time caller is going to get nervous.

Especially when you call Paul Finebaum to defend Auburn, you've got to be nervous that he's going to twist something you said into something you didn't really say.
