Quote
“If I ever get a chance to play Carolina I’m going to make them pay for passing up on me,” Dareus told WQAM radio host Michael Irvin. ”Denver I’ll get a chance to play them in the regular season (this year) and I’m going to make it hell for them every time I play against them. .. I worked my butt off to the point where I’m not going to give you a reason not to pick me. You’re not going to look at me and be like, ‘Well he’s good, but…” That ‘but’ word is never going to come up when you mention my name."

"My sole focus was for me not to give you a reason to not pick me and you still don’t? Okay, I understand you have needs somewhere else, but if you need somebody to control your front and be a commander across the front and not let anything happen? I work my butt off to do that, and you pass me up still? Okay, I’ve got something for you.”

How many plays did each play? I mean to get a true feel of how dominate Fairly really is we need to know if he used even less plays to produce more.

I'm not going to get into the open ended debate as to who is the better DL. I'm not surprised that Fairley has more tackles, etc, due to defensive style and philosophy.

While NFL teams don't always hit the hammer on the head with their draft picks, I have to believe that these organizations with tens of millions of dollars riding on these guys working out have a reason for picking one player over another. Especially in the first round. There are three other teams that took three other DL before Fairley. Maybe it's because those 3 players fit each team's particular style, or played in a similar system, or whatever. I don't know. There are a million reasons each way, probably. I just think it's kind of short sighted to say "Dude, Fairley had a bunch more tackles than Dareus. Fairley>Dareus relative to the NFL."

Shit, Terrence Cody finished 08 with 21 tackles and 09 with 28 tackles. While alot of times he didn't even play 3rd downs, his stats still weren't all that impressive. However, he still went in the 2nd round. He was a true two-gap NT that played in an NFL type 3-4 scheme, and there was a team out there looking for a two-gap NT. It just worked out. Sometimes teams are simply looking for something specific.

And that fat tub of goo will be on the two deep this season as well. I mean, I could make a decent argument as to why Cody should have went alot later than he did. He should have. I guess my point here is if a team could find a need for TC to snatch him up in the second round, I'm sure a team could identify a reason to take MD in the first round.

Objectively watching both of them play a LOT, Fairley created more problems, double teams and was just more a general disturbance to the rhythm of an offense. Not even looking at the numbers, although they do help solidify that claim.

I don't doubt Dareus will be a solid performer, just as he was at Alabama...but we know who the show stopper is in this comparison. Opposing teams were scared shitless of the man, as in Randy White or Dwight Freeney. And I know scouts were high on Dareus's versatility but I think Fairley might surprise and play some end anyway. Dareus caught RBs. Fairley terrorized QBs.

Alabama's DL philosophy is to have bigger guys, push/move the pocket, and let the LBs do the dirty work. While obviously nobody would complain about a DL getting a sack or two if they can, Bama's DL doesn't typically pin their ears back and just bull rush the OL down after down. Their pressure is mainly based from points OTHER than the DL.

Different guys play in different systems with different philosophies, and different NFL teams are looking for guys who meet their criteria for their philosophy. Very simple.

Yes, so one is stay at home and man your zone, while the other attacks.

SPuat's DL play paddycake with the OL, Auburn's DL rips through the OL and fucks the opponents up in the backfield.  I loved the Oregon play where they didn't block Fairley so the QB could read where he was going.  The QB must not have realized that Fairley doesn't tiptoe around.  Or when the MSU QB faked the handoff to the RB and Fairley ripped through the line, knocked the QB down and tossed the RB about 5 yards backwards. (the commentator laughed and said that Fairley is in the backfield sorting out who has the ball by tackling everyone).
