To pay or not to pay...

I have the perfect solution for the question of paying athletes or not paying.  It's so simple I can't believe nobody has seized on it yet.

I probably already said this, but here it goes again.

Put a percentage of all merchandise sales into an escrow account.  Any item that's "officially licensed" counts.

Each sport gets a percentage.  Smaller sports like frisbee golf just don't get as much, but that's left to school discretion.

Athlete plays two seasons, he gets X.  Plays three, he gets Y. Four, gets Z.

It's an incentive for idiots who aren't draft ready to stick it out because there's money at the end.   Make it so that students who begin their fourth season can get loans against their share.

Athletes are rewarded for helping improve the university image because more stuff sold = more of a share for them later.

Naaaa....makes too much sense.

In other news....The piece of the article below makes you wonder why we can't pay players while the NCAA is worth an estimated $700 million?????  Who knew?

The NCAA has gone to great legal -- and it turns out financial -- lengths to protect the trademarked nickname for its signature event.

Quietly last October, the association paid $17.2 million to sports and entertainment marketer Intersport to stop using the term "March Madness," which has been attached since the 1980s to the NCAA's Division I men's basketball tournament.

The settlement, spelled out in financial statements but unbeknown to most in the NCAA's member schools and conferences, gives it sole ownership of a trademark that has been the subject of several legal disputes and challenges over the years. While large on its face, the eight-figure amount accounts for less than 21/2 percent of the association's $700 million-plus budget.

Quick, someone get a copyright on "Mark Madness".

Shut the fuck up, logic.

I've heard someone suggest something similar.  Makes sense, but isn't the college education worth something?  How about amending that to "get your degree and get paid a percentage based on the number of years you played."

I like that idea too.  Make getting the degree worth a little extra.  But, it stops at your 4th year...5th or 6th Year Seniors won't get paid more than the 4th year guys.

Of course it's worth something.  Is it equal in value to the merchandising Alabama gets from selling #22 jerseys?  Not even close.
