After sitting down and watching the 5 candidates that participated, I have to say Herman Cain is my clear #1 choice.  Apparently a lot of others feel the same way - he's trending on Twitter and currently the #2 search on Google Trends.  The Fox News focus group also said he won hands-down.

If I had to rank the 5 that participated and how likely they are to get my vote, it would go like this:

1.  Herman Cain
2.  Gary Johnson
3.  Ron Paul
4.  Rick Santorum
5.  Tim Pawlenty

I like Johnson's stand on everything but abortion, but that's not a big issue for me in 2012. 

Anyone else watch it?

I didn't watch it, but I used to listen to HC on the radio. He lays it out. And being black, he can address a lot of subjects differently and get away with it. He needs to be on the ticket as one or the other.

Caught bits and pieces of it.  Did catch from Lutz where Cain got his highest marks and I have to agree with him.  Let the gov't get out of the way and let businesses do what they do best.  Create jobs!  I have it recorded and will give it a look.  Did notice that SC people were pissed at the others that didn't show up.

My reasoning is that Cain totally won this debate. Pawlenty totally lost it. And the other 3 were kind of on par. Paul was def not at his best that I have seen him at before. I don't particularly care for Johnson's hardline stance on tarriffs. Like you Ogre, I can get over many of the social things for 2012.

Cain/Christie??? Would love it. Both of those guys just ooze leadership and can carry a room.

Herman Cain knocked it out of the park in the Debate.  I hope that he can gain some political traction from it.

Well, it was a breath of fresh air.  It was good to see some new faces but I would have liked to have seen those three there as well to compare and/or contrast with the issue.  I'm not on the Herman Cain wagon yet but I certainly do like the guy.

Herman Cain is probably the most interesting candidate so far for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

He’s a charismatic Tea Party and Obama-bashing African American who won (according to polls by Fox, which hosted the debate) the first GOP presidential debate.

He also spent 10 years as the CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, which he returned to profitability shortly after he took charge. Before that, he achieved tremendous success with a chain of Burger King stores in the Philadelphia region.   

On Obama, Cain said his administration is “the worst in current history.” 

On his own business experience, he said he is a problem solver -- he defines the right problem, assigns the right priority, and surrounds himself with the right people.


 On the fact he’s never held a public office before, he said most Washington, D.C. politicians have held public office before and they’re doing a terrible job.

On his race, the Atlantic reported the following anecdote:

At a GOP confab in New Orleans last year, Cain railed against liberals, who, he said, slander conservatives as “racist, redneck tea-baggers.” He paused for effect, then brought the house down: “I had to go look in the mirror to see if I missed something!”

Aside from his personal background – which is arguably the most interesting part of him to many people – Cain is a bona fide conservative.

He is staunchly against abortion in all cases, supports the concept of the gold standard, and wants to cut taxes. 

You’d think he’s libertarian, but he breaks rank by supporting a strong national defense (Cain worked for the US Navy early in his career).

Moreover, he was the Chairman of the Kansas City Federal Reserve from 1995 to 1996. Unlike many libertarians, he expressed no interest in shutting down the Federal Reserve and does not believe it should be audited.
