I was thinking that too.

Along with the fact that he seeks human approval instead of God's.  He probably loves his reputation as a bible thumper.  And he probably genuinely thought he was helping Calloway.  And he probably loved that he was helping his university. 

But once they start pressing him...he'll get scared.  He'll start losing that feeling of acceptance.  He'll start feeling the heat and wonder if he's getting thrown under the bus.  What will his church think?  What will his peers think?  What will his reputation be?  He'll get a bit sweaty.  Clammy hands.  Cold feet.

And then BAM.  The blame game begins.  "They made me do it."  "I was encouraged by so and so."  "Here's how it went down."
