Enterprise coach comments on ex-AU player's recruitment

Enterprise head football coach Kevin Collins said he never saw anything out of the ordinary in the recruitment of Raven Gray when the former Wildcat defensive end standout was at Enterprise.

Gray, who signed with Auburn out of Enterprise in 2006 then went to Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) Community College and re-signed with Auburn, was one of four former Tiger players who alleged during an HBO interview aired Wednesday night that they received payments either in recruiting or while playing at Auburn.

Gray, who missed the 2008 season at Auburn with a knee injury and never played with the Tigers, said he received between $2,500 and $3,000 during his recruitment out of junior college from a person he described as an Auburn representative.

“Loyalty is the key,” Gray told HBO. “This man give me money I’m going to be loyal to him and go to Auburn.”

Collins, who was head coach when Gray was a senior at Enterprise, told the Dothan Eagle Thursday that he never saw anything of that nature occur during Gray’s recruitment out of high school.

“To my knowledge there was never anything inappropriate when he was here at Enterprise,” Collins said. “All the colleges who recruited here did so in legal fashion. I never saw anything come to that.”

Collins said when college recruiters came to visit Enterprise, all the interviews done with Gray were held in his office in his presence.

“Nothing like that happened with Auburn or any other schools who came here,” Collins said of any payment talk. “All of the recruiting process was done within the rules.”

The Wildcat head coach said he wasn’t sure of Gray’s current whereabouts.

“I have had no contact with him in over a year,” Collins said.

While at Enterprise, Gray earned all-state honors from the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a senior and was honorable mention as a junior. As a senior, he earned 62 tackles, including 10 quarterback sacks and 12 others for losses. He also had 20 quarterback hurries and five fumble recoveries.

He was generally regarded as one of the top 10 players in the state of Alabama and was ranked the 51 st overall player in the country by Tom Lemming’s Prep Football Report. He was considered among the top 25 defensive ends in the country and a four-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Gray was considered a five-star defensive end recruit coming out of Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) Community College.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'
