Happy St. Patrick's Day
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:12:14 PM »
Happy St. Patrick's Day to my fellow X'ers.  I will be eating Ruben's and drinking Jameson and water in honor of the Irish side of the family.

A few quick toast

Quote
Here's to women's kisses,
and to whiskey, amber clear;
Not as sweet as a woman's kiss,
but a darn sight more sincere!

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

May you always have a clean shirt, a clear conscience, and enough coins in your pocket to buy a pint!

May you have food and raiment, a soft pillow for your head.
May you be forty years in heaven before the devil knows you’re dead.

Yeah, I get way to excited about this, but my Grandfather and his people (McBride's) are fresh off the boat Irish.

With you there. I'll be heading down to the pub shortly to exercise my genetics by downing a glass of Jameson or 8.

Only if you're Jewish.  Corned beef didn't get associated with the Irish until they immigrated to New York, beef was far too expensive in Ireland.  Alton Brown said, it must be true!

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Well it actually dates back to 12th century in the homeland, but by the 1700s multiple famines caused beef in general to be in short supply and it never really re-entered into Irish cuisine until the mass immigrations into the us as you stated. I honestly don't care for it much. Cabbage and shepherds pie I do like.  And Jameson.

We would be having this, but for the past few years I have been making my sandwiches and my neighbors have kept requesting them.  Seeing as how I am a nice guy I keep making them.  A shepherds pie done correctly is heavenly.

Many see this cuisine as bad or boring and bland. But I love it. Meat and potatoes is what it really boils down to. And I'm with you on leaving the nasty shit off a Reuben. Why fuck it up with nasty sauce and sour, pickled, rotten assed cabbage. No thanks. And although its more English, I do like a good fresh platter of fish n chips as well with a nice Smithwicks or Harp. I've only been able to get Smithwicks consistently in Savannah. If I am going to get corned beef, let it be known that Kevin Barrys on river street is most excellent.

I beg your pardon Sir!  I have to take multiple offense at your comment!  You have insulted my heritage!

Both my grandmothers (and one grandfather) made excellent NON-fascist sauerkraut as is tradition in my German-Swiss-AMERICAN family background.  It's especially gut during Oktoberfest and Von Steuben Day!

I have Irish/Scott on my mothers side and English on my dad's side.  Although it is believed that my last name is truly of Viking origin.  Apparently we landed at Normandy and made our way to England from there when William decided to conquer England......and hell no, we are not French, we got the hell out of there.  They just said we are English since it's not truly know where we came from. We are still investigating it. There are also a lot of us in Sicily.
