I'm not at the Alex Jones red alert level on this issue (Everyone buy and take potassium iodate and iodide!!) but I do think that it's worse than the Japanese are telling the public.  The main reasons I think that are, admittedly, anecdotal, but after seeing those dramatic hydrogen explosions in three of the reactor buildings I simply can't believe that this is not a major catastrophic event.  Also, we do know that the Japanese designers built these containment buildings with tanks near the roof where they kept the 'spent' fuel rods which could have easily been blown out in the hydrogen explosion event(s) even though the containment structure around the pressure vessel(s) and the vessel(s) themselves inside have been deluged in sea water to prevent a meltdown.  My opinion is that the real worry is not a meltdown but with the 'spent' fuel rods being blown out of their cooling tanks and possibly blown apart exposing the plutonium and uranium pellets inside them.  In all seriousness, what's your opinion on that latter possibility GarMan?  (Do we need to meet and discuss this over a cocktail and cigars this evening while we watch basketball?)

Me thinks cigars and cocktails are always in order, but we're not talking about this situation occuring in an unfriendly nation like Russia, China or North Korea.  We're physically working alongside them right now.  We have NRC officials onsite working with them to resolve the situation.  Here's an article the best explains it...
http://www.businessinsider.com/japan-reactors-pose-no-risk-2011-3

Meanwhile, they also repositioned the carrier Ronald Reagan after instruments onboard detected radiation exposure.  The mass media outlets normally stop at that forgetting to explain that the crew was only exposed to about one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation in the environment which by the way is no different than picking up your bag at the TSA checkpoint after it's been scanned.

The US ships found these radiation readings before the actual belief of severe air contamination. It is believed that two of the site reactors have begun partial meltdown. The lack of cool down of the reactors is the fear, and even worse one of the sites is believed to have been fully exposed to the outside air. The Japanese Government is not denying this. Why? Because the actual site is not owned by the government but a contract company similar to Alabama Power. The same company that has been in question several times in the past about nuclear incidents. The hope here is that they can get power back to the back-up safety generators. Is it too late? Here is the deal, this will not effect any other country except Japan and maybe Russia; in a health standpoint that is.

Not sure what you mean by "too late"...  They just need to complete the cool down process.  Fear of containment breach is not necessarily the end of the world, Japan or the neighborhood where the plant is located because the reactors have already been shut down.  We're really just dealing with heat dissipation at this point.

Too late to keep the area from being seriously contaminated. By area, I mean the plant itself and the nearby towns. I was listening last night and it was said that they were trying to get power back on. If they can do that, maybe they can get those cells cooled down.

I hate it for the Japanese, they don't need this shit and dealing with earthquake and Tsunami aftermath.

And then you got idiots like Hitlary on the left claiming this is cause for alarm against building more nuclear plants here in the US. So I guess with all of this global climate change, she is predicting a 9.0 earthquake here in the future? Let's all just go into paralysis mode over what might possibly happen. I mean if aliens target our nuclear plants, we will never recover. Let's tear them down and never discuss it again so that our alien enemies cannot use it against us.

But Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday the crisis raised questions about the use of nuclear energy in the United States.

"What's happening in Japan raises questions about the costs and the risks associated with nuclear power but we have to answer those," she said in an interview with MSNBC in which she emphasized the need for a comprehensive U.S. energy policy.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I'm with GarMan here. The media is overblowing a lot of this. In fact they WANT it get worse. Bad news sells. Keeps these bastard in business. Watch them when they report on it from Japan live. They all have boners over this disaster. Especially Shephard "i love ole miss" Smith. Making up hypotheticals about imminent meltdowns and the body count "will surely reach 100k by the time its all over". Seriously? And foxnews has been the worst one.

And chinook is correct. A lot of pride involved. Let the Germans handle it.

The Hildebeast is on the wrong side of The ONE on this argument; the Messiah has already authorized the two new reactors at Plant Vogtle here in Georgia which are now under construction; first new ones in the US in 30 years I think.

Tree-hugging, greeny idiots can't explain where we're supposed to replace the 20% of power that we derive from nuclear reactor plants much less the 54% that we get from coal-fired power plants or the 18% from natural gas (which they also hate).  Hydro-electric, wind turbines, geo-thermal, and solar only account for 8% (6% of that being hydro-electric).
