The University of Alabama is investigating its own police department after an anonymous letter alleged issues of sexist and racist bullying within its ranks.

The letter, allegedly written by a UAPD employee and sent to several media outlets, said there is an ongoing culture of favoritism that allows certain behaviors to go unchecked within the department.

"Due to the need for confidentiality regarding a pending investigation and out of consideration for the privacy of University employees, it is inappropriate to address the specifics alleged in the anonymous letter or the status of the investigation," Deborah Lane, University Relations associate vice president, said in an emailed statement. "However, in general, any allegation of improper conduct by UAPD or any other employee is thoroughly investigated."

The letter writer said he or she wants to shed light on the "unethical and immoral acts taken by the administration" of UAPD, and that "more than one standard exists for police employees at UAPD."

The letter alleges one UAPD officer received a written reprimand for insubordination after trying to address a report of another officer bullying a female colleague.

The same officer accused of bullying a female colleague "appears to have no issue with bullying African-American officers, especially those for whom he is directly responsible," according to the letter.

The letter also alleges several incidents of interoffice relationships and at least one incident of an officer "illegally accessing computer information belonging to his wife" in relation to his private life.

"My fellow employees and I cannot fix this and suffer as a result of it," the letter reads. "We want to share what we know, but we do not completely trust UA leadership and we certainly do not trust UAPD management and administration. We plead with this to those who can make a difference."

Though a fully functioning police deparment, UAPD does not operate independently from UA.

Its offices are on campus, all media inquiries or any information requests must go through UA's spokesperson and UAPD reports to Lynda Gilbert, UA's vice president for financial affairs.

The university would not say who or what department is overseeing the investigation of these allegations.

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
Court documents show an alleged serial bank robber is expected to plead guilty to federal charges.

The paperwork filed claims Timothy Bryan Standfield plans to plead guilty to a federal bank robbery charge.

According to these documents, Standfield admitted to robbing two banks and one credit union in the Shoals last year. He was arrested in August.

Standfield went on to say he used an airsoft gun that belonged to his children, and stored the money in a secret compartment located under the front seats of his truck.

If the plea and plea agreement are accepted in federal court, Standfield will have to return the more than $100,000 stolen in the heists.

At this time it's unclear exactly when Standfield is expected to make his official plea.

Former Alabama, Russellville player Calloway arrested on drug charges
By Bernie Delinski Staff Writer | Posted 5 hours ago

FLORENCE — Former University of Alabama and Russellville High football player Brent Calloway is free on bail after his arrest over the weekend on drug charges, police said.

Calloway, 22, of Florence, is charged with felony unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and second-degree possession of marijuana, police said.

Florence police Sgt. Scott Perkins said the arrest occurred at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Perkins said Calloway was pulled over after he ran a red light at Wood Avenue and Hermitage Drive.

"A drug dog was called to do a search on the outside of the vehicle," Perkins said. "It gave an indication that the odor of drugs was present."

Police recovered 8 grams of spice, which is synthetic marijuana, and a small bag containing marijuana, Perkins said.

Calloway was released on $4,000 bail, police said.

This was not Calloway's first brush with the law.

In 2013, Calloway was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card. He admitted using a student's university action card/debit card and knowing it was stolen.

In 2011, he was arrested on a charge of second-degree possession of marijuana in Tuscaloosa when he was a passenger in a vehicle police had stopped on campus.

Calloway was dismissed from the Alabama football team in February 2013 along with three other players following their arrests.

Calloway was a high school All-American and four-star recruit. As a senior at Russellville, Calloway ran for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns while also starring at linebacker.

He made headlines in January 2011 after switching his long-standing commitment from Alabama to Auburn. Another change of heart led him to sign with Alabama the next month.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Birmingham has charged a 22-year-old University of Alabama student with stealing almost $10,000 from the student loan funds of others studying at UA after a joint investigation by university police and the FBI.
U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance said the student, Briana Jackson, has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of unauthorized access to a University of Alabama computer and agreed to pay back $9,598 in restitution for the money she stole electronically.

Vance said Jackson started running a phishing scam in April 2011 by creating an e-mail address with a name suggesting it was connected to the university's housing department.

Vance said Jackson then emailed around 60 Alabama students, including her friends and acquaintances, and asked for their usernames and passwords for MyBama, UA's student website. More than 40 students sent her that information, Vance said.

More than two years after making the account, Jackson used the log-ins to access at least 25 accounts in July and August 2013. Once inside, she accessed the students' federal and state student loan funds and electronically transferred $9,598 to a Green Dot reloadable money card that she allegedly registered using the name and personal information of another student whose information she stole, Vance said.

Using an ATM and a Western Union money transfer, Jackson withdrew $1,001 of the stolen money in cash before the University of Alabama was able to freeze the account and prevent more from being taken.

Vance credited an alert investigator with the University of Alabama Police Department for catching the crime and preventing much greater financial loss.

UAPD Police Chief Keith Summerlin praised cooperation between local and federal agencies to being the case to its conclusion.

"The successful outcome in this case is a direct result of the diligent and tenacious efforts of UA and federal law enforcement personnel working collaboratively to solve this crime and limit the loss to the victims," Summerlin said. "It highlights the strength of the relationships that exist between UA, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office."

The maximum sentence for accessing a protected computer is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, Vance said.

Secret Society At University Of Alabama Blamed For Blocking New Student President From Picking His Own Staff

University of Alabama's Student Government Association Senate voted Tuesday against appointing Chisolm Allenlundy to be chief of staff to the newly elected student president. A student group focused on reforming on-campus politics alleges that the Machine, a secret society that controls much of the school's student government, influenced the decision.

In a 32-13 vote, Senate members blocked Allenlundy from taking the highest position in SGA President Elliot Spillers' cabinet. Virtually all of the votes opposing Allenlundy were from Machine-backed senators, the student group, United Alabama Project, claims.

Spillers is the first black SGA president in nearly 40 years, and is believed to be the first candidate since 1986 to win without the backing of the Machine.

Because SGA rules stipulate that no other appointments can happen until the Senate has confirmed a chief of staff, voting down Allenlundy has temporarily stalled Spillers' ability to assemble a cabinet. Spillers has not said who he will submit in his next attempt to confirm a chief of staff.

Allenlundy has served as a student senator for a year and as the executive director of UAP for another year, but senators who voted against him argued that he didn't have enough experience to be chief of staff.

"This specific job of chief of staff is one of the most important roles in the SGA," student senator Jackson Britton told The Crimson White, the campus newspaper. "You have to have certain experiences, not something like the senate, but true exec experience."

Britton initially agreed to speak with The Huffington Post, but did not respond Thursday to subsequent inquiries for comment. HuffPost contacted three other senators who voted against the appointment, but none of them responded to requests for comment.

"It does make sense why [the appointment] would need to be confirmed by the Senate," Allenlundy told HuffPost, noting that the chief of staff is able to vote on some issues through his role on the SGA executive council.

But he also said he considered the argument that he lacks experience to be "a little bit bogus."

Patrick Fitzgerald, a UA student senator backing Allenlundy, said the vote failed due to "petty politics."

"They have more people in their delegation than us and they just want to make sure we know that early," Fitzgerald said. "I feel this will not work well for them. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Saying Chisholm isn't qualified is like saying two plus two equals seven."

The Machine has operated underground for a century without interference from university administration, although UA student government rules do not permit political parties. This year, UAP introduced a proposal to allowed them, with hopes that it would force the Machine to go public. The student Senate -- again, allegedly due to influence from the Machine -- voted it down last month.

It takes a drunk to write about a drunk.

Quote
For people in Alabama, Jim Dent is probably best known for his 2001 work "The Junction Boys," which chronicled Paul "Bear" Bryant's 10-day summer camp in Junction, Texas for members of the 1954 Texas A&M football team. The "camp" is legendary - those who made it through are referred to as "survivors" -  and Dent's book was made into a well-received ESPN movie. More recently, he wrote another bestseller about Texas A&M's star quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Dent's life sounds like an American success story but it's actually far from it. Last week, the 62-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in Texas state prison resulting from November 2013 pleas on two driving while intoxicated charges. Those were his ninth and 10th DUI convictions over more than three decades. He's already spent more than two years in prison on similar charges.

Dent fled to Mexico after the 2013 pleas before returning in January to face the charges.

"I realize now I have no one to blame but myself," Dent told the Dallas Morning News in a profile shortly before his sentencing. His story of triumph and tragedy - both of his own making - is well worth the read.
