I honestly have no clue how either of these guys will turn out in the pros but I have a hard time believing that Cam Newton doesn't have more potential to succeed than Mr. Luck.  Not saying for one second that Luck won't be the bomb but how can anyone honestly compare the two and say Luck is the better prospect?  How much has anyone here actually seen him play.  Take a look at a simple comparison.

Andrew Luck 6'4" 235

Passing:  263/372 70.7% 3338 yds 32 TD 8 INT  170.16 PR

Rushing: 453 Yards 3 TD

Cam Newton 6'6" 250

Passing: 185/280 66.1% 2854 yds 30TD 7INT 182.05 PR

Rushing: 1,483 Yards 20TD

A couple of things to note here.  Luck plays in the offense minded PAC SUX and in fact threw almost 100 more passes for 32 TD's.  Cam throws almost 100 less passes for 30 TDs....against the best defenses, the best league in the country..by a country mile.  Cam rushed for 1,483 yards and 20 TDs...again..against the best defenses in the country, while Luck hammered out 3 scores.  Yes, I'm well aware that no QB will be able to run in the pros like Cam did this year in college; however, he WILL run a good bit regardless and that threat will make him dangerous in the pros as well.  It's not like you can't run at all in the pros from the QB position.  It's been done.  Ask John Elway, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Michael Vick etc.

My biggest thing with Cam is looking at what he did in this league and how he improved to become an incredibly well rounded QB in ONE year.  Just think what he could do with 2-3 years of professional tutoring and experience.

Word

All those words are good, but Cam has something that can't be measured.  It's internal.

Whatever happened to him at  Blinn, it made him focus and want it more than anybody I've ever seen.  Need an extra burst of speed to run away from one of the fastest defenders in the league?  Reach inside and find it.  Realize you need to become a better passer?  Completely transform yourself in the span of about two weeks. Need to block out the biggest distraction in the history of college football?  Smile!  Talent, yes. But 95% of what makes Cam great and why he will blow up the NFL like maybe nobody ever has?  It's inside.  It's in his head.  It's in his heart.

I'm not sure, but I think it was Chris Carter on the afternoon NFL show on ESPN that basically echoed this.  He said that more than the throwing and extra things Cam has been doing, the way he handled himself and performed for his team, his team mates, and his school proved that he had the mental and emotional fortitude to make it as a true leading QB in the NFL.  Of course there's other factors, but it shows a focus and leadership factor that could escalate his standing in the draft.

Put it this way.

You tell Cam that nobody has ever stood on the 50 yard line at Jordan Hare and leaped over the jumbotron and I see him standing on the 50 and looking in that direction?  I wouldn't bet my house against him flying right the fuck out of there.

That is exactly the way I feel about him. I had that feeling about him starting with the UK game. Up until then, he was just a pretty good player. From the UK game on, any time he stepped out on the field, I thought there was no way anyone could beat us...

The argument in the other thread was who is going to be picked first, and who is the better pro prospect.  Luck would have been picked first and is still the better pro prospect because ...

1. Luck ran an NFL style offense in college.
2. Spread QB's have not succeeded in the NFL.
3. Luck has done it for three years against D1 teams.

Also, for a typical pro style QB, Luck is very athletic.  NFL types don't necessarily care that a QB can run like Mike Vick (or Cam), but they do want them to move in the pocket like Aaron Rodgers which Luck can certainly do.

Personally I think Cam is going to make it in the NFL and be great.  Mostly because he is willing to listen and work, something QB's like Vince Young and Mike Vick pre-prison were not willing to do.  But if I were needing a QB to come in and play right off in the NFL I would pick Luck.

I had that feeling while sitting in row 18 Section 41 during ASU.  Maybe it was seeing him live.  Maybe it was the physical presence he had on the field.  Actually I think it was just the effortless running and confidence he seemed to have.   I know it was just ASU, but damn.  I don't know.  I agree, but it didn't happen during the A-day game.  It didn't happen listening to the predictions from even AU beat writers.  It was seeing him in person, on the field in his natural habitat that it seemed that we might have someone special in orange and blue.

Turned out that K was spot on with JRussell. I was wondering what anyone couldn't see in the guy with the physical tools, great stats, SEC....

Turned out to be a head case of epic proportions.  Cam seems to be the opposite.  In reading the article, this guy is ultra-focused on reaching his goals.  Russell just took a truckload of $$$ and said fuck it.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

2000, I would probably agree on Luck being the first pick but my argument would be that Cam has the greater potential because of one particular thing.  As you said, Luck has done it for 3 years in a pro style offense.  A lot to be said for that.  I look at what Cam was able to accomplish in one year in this league and how he progressed overall as a quarterback....and the progressions he should logically make at the next level.

In looking at his stats, Cam had that killer stretch of games agaisnt UK, Arky and LSU where he did it all and firmly placed himself atop the Heisman race.  But you look at those games and the one thing that stands out is the rushing totals.  He was approaching 200 yards in all 3 games.  From that point forward, Auburn played a stretch that included, Ole Miss, Chatt., UGA, Alabama, South Carolina & Oregon.  In those games, with the exception of UGA, in which he went for 151 on the ground, he was either bottled up more or Malzahn changed up the strategy.  Either way, he threw for 17TDs and only 2 INTs during the stretch run.  He had to become a far more complete QB and pulled it off with flying colors.

Again, it's possible that Luck would have been #1, but I wouldn't discount where Cam will be after he goes through his workouts for the pro scouts.  Look what we thought of Sam Bradford and what he was able to do when asked to show his stuff.
