Do y'all think Oregon cares?
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:09:15 PM »
I was just thinking about the BCSNC game.

If Auburn had lost, I think I would have been devastated.  "Just happy to be there" and "SEC champs" and "Iron Bowl champs" and "perfect regular season"... yeah, whatever, none of that would have been enough, I think.  I might have said those things out loud, but inside.  Ripped to pieces.  Crushed.

But that is just to be expected from SEC fans, no?  Do y'all think the Duck fans are feeling like that? I am not talking about the players and coaches -of course they feel terrible.  People all over the US know how passionate SEC fans are - but I just don't associate the PAC-whatever and oregon with passionate fans.  The low turnout they had for the game was proof to me that they just aren't that into it.

I have not explored any Duck message boards, but I know that had AU lost that game, the healing would still not yet have begun here or on al.com open forums or BOL or any other SEC board.

I think they just hit another bowl and called it good.

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

We didn't beat them, they beat themselves.  That's the company line.

They fully expect to be back next year and aren't fazed.

I have zero to go on other than scanning a couple of Quack message boards and my own feelings.  Agree 100% that it would have crushed AU fans far more simply because of the league we play in.  So many of us SEC fans put college football right up there with the top 1-2 passions in life. (Almost ahead of deer huntin' for some people) I think we, as Auburn fans, needed that for some validation....to be able to say we belong with the elite in the league and college football in general.  We proved it.

I don't care what any other Auburn fan says about admitting this because it may just be me that feels this way.  But, I think we needed that to wipe out that little brother syndrome perception that so many have/had...once and for all.  You can line up the records as was done in another thread and show all day how our program stacks up against Bama's, BUT...we never could say we've accomplished what they have always thrown up in our faces.  This is the final piece to the puzzle...for me anyway.

When I got on the elevator at my hotel in Tempe that night, there was a Duck alum, I'd guess in his late 30s, with his son who was about 9 or 10.  And the son was just bawling.  Father said that kid was just devastated they didn't win.

I told the kid that I was his age in 83, was a student for 93, and an alum in 04.  It hurts, but you get over it.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I will say a few things.  Devastation...a bit too strong, surely disappointed. It surely deflated an ego created by Nike. Most have moved on...the die-hards thinking of next season.  It's winter....rainy...cloudy...people are thinking about spring summer sunshine and warm temperatures.

The Ducks like the Beavers have never had much success until recently.   They (most out here will disagree) don't have the hatred like we share with Alabama.  Passionate is lacking for those reasons.   Auburn fans definitely wanted this more...it was AU's turn.   Most Duck fans felt it was a bonus to a perfect season.

I can only speculate a significant (perhaps a bit strong but whatever) percentage of Oregonians did not know the Ducks were playing for the national title.  I know there were several on the airplane asking "What Game"? only to be berated by a few drunk duck fans.    On a side note:  The Spinning class I take at the gym is on Monday's @ 5:30.  The instructor told me they had a full class on BCS night.

It was apparent the excitement prior to the game.  News outlets, businesses and many band-wagoners showed there support for the Ducks.  The fitness center was a sea of yellow and green.  Today...nothing.   A Friday evening on 3rd Street was yellow and green now it's the typical wine crowd with the occasional supporter of either teh Duck or Beaver.  Coffee stand boards now read 2 for 1 mocha's.

I've settled back in my own little AU world in the PNW...just this time with a bigger smile.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

Btw, I would've been devastated somewhat.  I know before the game, I told Chop and Jumbo that whatever happens, whatever the outcome is, it has been a hell of a ride and just to sit here in Pheonix Stadium sharing a laugh with Jumbo and the rest of the cool X guys and eating the awesome Big Ass Chilli Dawg is just fuckin' sweet......Then we kicked off, the Oregon returner dropped the ball then was clobbered for about a 5 yard gain, all that whore shit went right out the fuckin' window.  I wanted the Damn Championship....I wanted to kill the Ducks, I wanted to dance around covered in Duck's blood...Fuck 'em ALL and feed 'em fish heads. I wish we would've beat 'em by a Hundred and Fitty...WOOOOO!!!!!

How that guy passed out beside us is absolutely amazing....I know he was completely blitzed, but DAMN!!!  I don't think he would've been too devastated, lol.  I was getting kinda tired of hearing him say Coach Cheeeeeze...like in the middle of a play.  I don't think he actually knew where he was.  When Cam fumbled, you and I were pissed, then I looked over at that guy and he said....Coach Cheeeeze!!!  I actually started laughing.  Then 5 minutes later he was out.
