Poll: Auburn has been a safe bet, but what's in store in the BCS championship game?
Published: Monday, December 27, 2010, 10:02 AM     Updated: Monday, December 27, 2010, 10:38 AM
By Charles Goldberg/Auburn Bureau, The Birmingham News, Press-Register, and The Huntsville Times

You could have won some serious Monopoly money betting Auburn this season -- you know, if you did it where such practices are OK, and where Monopoly money is legal tender.

Auburn is 9-3 against the betting line, and we'll use that as an excuse -- we mean, reason -- to introduce this little story as we mainly wait for the Tigers to return to practice Tuesday for the BCS championship game against Oregon on Jan. 10. The Ducks are 6-4-1 against the line.

We have a poll here, but, remember, it's for Entertainment Purposes Only.

Here are some basic facts you'll need to know if you land on Park Place:
**Auburn is a 3-point favorite
**The over/under is 74 (no, that's not just for the first quarter)

The BCS title game features two of the Top 10 offenses in the nation, the Heisman Trophy winner in Cam Newton and one of the three other Heisman finalists in LaMichael James. Those are some of the reasons why the over/under is a lofty 74.

Monopoly players who favored Auburn and Arkansas were winners in the SEC this season. Those two teams combined to go 18-5 against the line. Four other SEC teams beat the line, but they were either 7-5 or 6-5, and real players of the board game know that's not winning, once you pay the Community Chest.

Online Surveys & Market Research
There will be lots of proposition bets for the BCS game as kickoff draws near. Here are some of the early ones (exchange rates for Monopoly money are subject to change):

Will either team score in the first 4½ minutes?
(You've got to put up 115 bucks to win 100)

Oregon total points: 35½
(Over/under: Even money)

Auburn total points: 38½
(Over/under: Even money)

Team to score first?
(Oregon even money. Auburn $130 to win $100)

First score
(Touchdown: $400 to win $100. Other: $100 to win $300)

Longest touchdown of the game: 64½ yards
(Over/under: $115 to win $100)

I've got Auburn and I think the over barely wins.

I would bet on Oregon under 35 1/2 and Auburn over 38 1/2.

I see the score being something like 42-34 Auburn.

I think this will be a fun game to watch. It's hard to guess a score since both offenses are fairly high powered. Their DL isn't very big at all. All of their starters on DL are upperclassmen, but the biggest one is 256 lbs. I just don't see that working out against a senior AU OL that averages around 305 lbs per player. Oregon seems to have a decent LB corp, though.

I want to see what their answer to Fairley is. I just don't see them being able to block him. And if they want to run opposite of him, bootleg out, etc, then that works out somewhat for AU too, because you're dictating what they do, and its easier to defend. I think this will be a very entertaining game, one way or another.

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I guess I'm an island here, but I disagree.

Using past National Championships as a precedent? Then yes.

But I don't think this is going to be typical of any offensive production in a National Championship game we have ever seen.

Even War Eagle!!!'s assessment is one point below the over. Between these two teams, I gotta believe the loser scores 35 or more...

I remember being at the AU-Arkansas game and saying "The only way this score gets topped this year is if Auburn plays Oregon for the National Championship."

Well, here we are.

I am not sold that Oregon will score 35 on Auburn's defense. I am not sure they will be able to block Fairley. Look at the Cal game. Cal had good pressure up the middle on Oregon and it took them out of their game.

I don't think they have seen a defensive line like they will see in 2 weeks. However, Auburn has seen way better defenses than Oregon's and we still have scored a lot. I think Oregon scores less than 30.

I don't think that Oregon will score at will against us either and I certainly don't think that Oregon is gonna match up better than any of the teams we have seen this year. If Auburn plays like they did in SECCG, look out because its gonna be an ugly duckling. On the other hand, I do think Oregon will score some points, mainly in the first and some in the second. The second half will be another well adjusted Auburn D and an Auburn O that is running like a smooth machine.

I see yall getting behind early. Lots of teeth gnashing, hair pulling, cussing, questioning WTF calls by the coaches, refs are screwing us, etc.
Then yall pull it out in the 4th quarter. It's been that way in the big games all year. Why change the formula if the baby ain't colicing?

I agree, I think Oregon scores 17 with a late field goal.

I hope so badly that you guys are right.

It would be nice to watch this game as comfortably as the SEC Championship game. I'd love to spend the majority of the time getting happy-drunk.

No, I have enough enemies on FB as it is. Besides, I'm sure you can find a bag o' dicks in your neck of the woods.

Actually, the reason I ask is me youngest had the colic bullshit. I thought maybe we could form some kind of "support" group where we smoke weed and drink the beers. Matter of fact all of Tiger X can join.
