They may not agree on taxes, the war in Afghanistan or health care, but members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly last week to honor Auburn University’s Heisman-winning quarterback, Cam Newton.

A resolution recognizing Newton was approved Wednesday by a vote of 378 to 15, with another 18 voting present. The ceremonial measure was introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, whose east Alabama district includes the Auburn campus, and was co-sponsored by the rest of the Alabama delegation, plus U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia (Newton is a native of College Park, Ga.).

The fact that some members voted against the resolution was unusual. A similar proposal honoring 2008 Heisman winner Sam Bradford, then of the University of Oklahoma, was approved by 394 to 0, with no lawmakers voting present. A resolution honoring last year’s winner, Mark Ingram of the University of Alabama, passed on a voice vote.

At least some of the opposition to Newton came from supporters of Auburn’s rivals in the Southeastern Conference, including Louisiana Republican Charles Boustany, an LSU fan (read separate post on his vote), and Mississippi Republican Gregg Harper, whose district includes Mississippi State University.

But others expressed more personal concerns. U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., said he voted against the resolution because of questions that erupted over Newton’s eligibility.

“Cam Newton has a tremendous opportunity for a great NFL career and I wish him the best, but he should not have been honored by the House today under this cloud,” Lipinski told the New York Times.

Among the 22 House members who did not vote was U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile. Bonner is a graduate of the University of Alabama and an avid fan of the Crimson Tide, but noted that he was a supporter of the resolution and missed the vote only because of an unavoidable flight delay.

“I join all my Auburn friends in congratulating a truly outstanding athlete on a remarkable season,” Bonner said.

Also of note: Remember Mark Ingram Day last year? Cam Newton Day was voted down in this last session. Can't find any news source to verify this, but that is what I was told.

The Alabama Legislature is in a special session regarding ethics. If it comes back up during the regular session and is voted down, then I would gripe.

Washington -- Before the U.S. House of Representatives finished work last week, it voted to honor Auburn quarterback Cam Newton for winning the Heisman trophy - college football's top honor.

The resolution passed 378-15. Among those voting no was Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette.

Was Boustany upset about reports Newton's father had tried to get compensation to send his prized recruit to Mississippi State before choosing Auburn?

No. It's not that complicated.

"Rep. Boustany is a graduate of the LSU Medical School and is an LSU supporter," explained Boustany spokesman Paul Coussan.

Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, R-New Orleans, sat out the Newton resolution vote. Everyone else in the Louisiana delegation voted yes.
