Cecil Gets Invite
« on: December 08, 2010, 10:18:33 AM »
Don't have a link but I've heard it discussed on several talk shows already that the decision was made to extend an invitation to the elder Newton for the Heisman ceremony.  Personally, I have mixed emotions about that but ultimately, I fall on the side of it being family and his family needs to be there for it.  I know I personally wouldn't care what my pops had done unless it was some egregious crime like feeling up little boys or murdering puppies or some shit.

I know the national media will skewer him if he shows and I certainly don't want anything to detract from Cam's day (And it will be Cam's day). However, even though it appears Cecil made a huge mistake, I think you put family over a little more potential bad press and allow him to be a part of one of the greatest days of his son's life.

What say you?

I got no problem with him being there. I would hope he would stay out of sight. Watch the awarding from a back room. At no time should he ever be in front of a camera.

I'm in full agreement here but you know the national media will seek him out and put cameras and microphones in his face.  It's something he'll have to deal with at some point anyway but his son's big day shouldn't be the time.  You know, if he shows and the media makes a farce of this ceremony, I just may have to fire off a tersely worded email to somebody.

I don't have a problem with him being there....except for the fact that it will detract from Cam's day. The cameras will be allover him and they'll relate the story over and over...and it just shouldn't happen. Personally, Cecil has to live with whatever it is that he did....forever. He hurt his kid. And I really think that was the last thing he wanted. He gets that from now until forever. Everyone says his name with a certain distaste. Fair? Maybe, maybe not.

He should be able to go. But it would be better if he didn't.

It is HIS son. Screw everyone else. When all is said and done, Cecil will still be his daddy and will be there until he dies. Everyone else will eventually fade away. Blood...water...and all that.

So whatever they decide is fine with me. It's not like he'll be dancing up and down the aisles.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

No problem here either. Family comes first, and if we're gonna be the Auburn family, thats how this thing needs to be approached. Sure, cameras will be get them some Cecil face time and maybe even the mics will be itching for the audio, but I have to say I would thing this being the Heisman ceremony the media will not be as story starved. I personally think the media recognizes that being all up on Cecil could actually backfire on them. Also, I look at this at different standpoint too. You know diddy has to be very ashamed and embarrassed. For him to put himself out there knowing this face time is coming says a lot.

My only fear is the vultures in the media turning it into a circus.  You know full well that every single mention of Cam when they're doing the bio's on all the finalists, will include all the controversy.  It's already going to be a situation where they won't allow anything that is 100% positive to be shown about Cam, regardless of whether Cecil is there or not.

Here's his incredible run against LSU being shown while the narrative will say, "Clouded in the pay-for-play scandal...." You know it's coming.  This is Cam's big day and he should be allowed to enjoy it and celebrate it to the fullest.  You know the media won't allow it.

Exactly.  Gayer Evans, or Shad or Brando or any of those jealous little dick motherfuckers will be waiting to pounce on anything that they can spin into guilt on Cam or Auburn's behalf.

But probably not during the Neisman broadcast itself.  The Heisman trust has a pretty tight grip on all of this stuff, and I doubt any mention will be made of the scandal during the actual broadcast.  The interviews and highlight reels are all pre-scripted.

Now, after the fact, when all the talking heads get to discuss it on Sportscenter?  Game on... but not during the broadcast.

If they talk about Cam, they would have to talk about LaMichael James and his beating up his girlfriend and his "borrowed" LandRover.  So I think Cam will get to have his moment with his dad.

Heard some of Brando yesterday and he was asked about the decision by the NCAA to make Cam eligible.  He said it was the right decision at the time BUT....of course the FBI investigation is ongoing and will bring out things at a later date.

Really Tim?  Really?  You know this?  You're in touch with the FBI?  What exactly are they investigating?

Apparently it's going to be "game on".  ESPN is going to air the special on SMU getting the death penalty.  There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth when the ceremony is over.

No shit, the FBI is pretty loose with sensitive information these days.  Why worry about a major case when they can leak shit to the all powerful Brando.  He always acts like a badass when he is on these shows, and acting like he would like to beat the shit out of some of the callers.  I'd like to call his fucking bluff.

I would rather him be there, than not.

I kind of wish he could have broken his silence a little earlier.

The homer in me feels like there is more to the story in Cecil's favor that maybe he's not at liberty to discuss.

I definitely don't feel like he "shopped around" Cam, as is often the wording when discussing this case. I truly believe it was more of a "they talked - he listened" kind of thing with MSU. It'd be nice if he'd at least confirm or deny that.

This is what baffles me.  I have heard that new stories are supposed to come out, someone has sources and they are going to run an article, ESPN is about to break another headliner, blah, blah, blah.

So you are telling me that you have the goods, know what is going to happen to AU in the future, have concrete sources and you aren't going to run the story?  You have done nothing for the last month but bitch, moan and get butthurt, but you aren't going to give up the goods?

<random outside person>Oh, no AUT1, they can't run the story b/c the FBI and DOJ has put a gag order on them.
<AUT1>Oh, so they can now tell the press what they can run and when they can run?

Lawyers, help me out here, seriously?  They can gag the press?  The press can call out members of the fucking CIA but you can't run a story about a collegiate athlete?  Didn't seem to hurt Judith Miller to run a story, nice cozy job with Fox News now.

This.  There's so much a part of me that says this was a Rogers/Cecil/MSU thing only.  That may look like homerism at it's finest but I have to believe that's why the NCAA and SEC made the decision they did.  OU said there was nothing out of line in his recruitment and AU said the same.  Yes, you'd expect that but as has been said numerous times, this thing has been investigated for months now....and the NCAA said they've found nothing to suggest otherwise.

I think Rogers saw the chance to get a top flight player to a dump like MSU because of Mullen and his connections there.  I think he pitched the $$$ thing to Cecil and felt he could broker a deal and pocket a little sumpn sumpn.  Win win for everyone.  But when no one bit on the $$$, reality set in and playing in Starkvegas for a loser of a program like that wasn't too appealing anymore.

Just sayin'....
