We've seen the NCAA reward those who are compliant with their investigation. Take Marcel Dareus for example. He not only was praised for his honesty in the agent-party case, but he was rewarded with less punishment from the NCAA. Because of that, Alabama was given less punishment as they got their player back on the field.
We don't know the details yet. We don't know who instigated the talks. We don't know if Cecil was drunk and made a stupid decision.
What we do know is that this has already been investigated and not one ounce of information has been released that implicates Cam Newton or Auburn.
Perhaps Cam, Auburn, and maybe Cecil were so up front with what went on at such an early date that the NCAA is rewarding (or going to reward) them for their honesty much like the Marcel Dareus case.
Compare that theory with the facts from the Albert Means case and the Reggie Bush case. Alabama/USC withheld information. They had to investigate further with people trying to hide the truth of what happened. They hammered both institutions for failing to control their football program.
Perhaps Auburn didn't wait to be investigated for something that happened between Cecil and MSU. Perhaps Auburn reported it in January as well.
Even if the Newton family is cooperating, I don't see the eligibility issue going away. This is way more serious than the Marcel Dareus situation. Even with him cooperating with that, he still had to sit out a few games. If they made a player sit out a few games after being deemed "one of the most honest student athletes we have ever interviewed" by the NCAA for attending a party thrown by an agent, when he said he didn't know an agent was throwing it, do you honestly think Cam will skate on his dad trying to get some cash out of MSU for his LOI? I doubt it.
Like I said before, it sucks for AU, because I really believe they did nothing wrong here. I don't think they are stupid enough to pay a player. They had nothing to do with the whole MSU thing, but unfortunately, will get left (somewhat) holding the bag. If by some miracle AU came out unscathed in this whole thing though, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all. AU didn't do anything, and shouldn't have to suffer.
