The NFL Will Suspend Players for Violent Hits

The NFL Will Suspend Players for Violent Hits

I don't have an article to quote, so maybe someone can fill one in.

But the NFL has passed a new rule saying that players will be suspended not only for illegal hits, but for hits that are reviewed and deemed "intended to cause injury."

For example, James Harrison was fined $75,000 for a hit on Massaquoi that left him with a concussion.  No flag for illegal helmet-to-helmet contact was thrown.

Thoughts?

What's so fucked up about that, is that, according to what Al Del Greco said this morning, the NFL is also profiting by selling pics of this "fineable/too violent" hit.   Just repeating what I heard, so I don't know details.

But yes, what you say is fact...don't know how they're going to enforce this yet...time will tell.

They ended up taking that picture down.

It's obviously all about money - protecting the star players.  I think the NFL is showing their greed with this new ruling.  "Everyone is still going to keep supporting and watching the NFL."

I must say, as a huge NFL fan, I really lose interest in a regular season game when I see one of those lame roughing the passer penalties.  These are nothing like the ones you see in college...you literally can't tackle a quarterback too hard or else you'll get hit with 15 yards.  I think imposing even more suspensions/penalties for big hits will hurt the league.

If the NFL really wants to stop injuries and concussions, perhaps they should look more closely at some good PED tests.  Human beings aren't supposed to weigh 260 pounds and still run a 4.5 40.

You're talking about gutting big time college and NFL football.  There's a reason nobody watches the shitty leagues like the WAC and Mtn West.

From the ones I could see on TV, the only one that looked intentional was the hit that Brandon Meriweather leveled on someone.  Todd Heap I think.......

To me the others were questionable.  Look, if it's flagrant and intentional, quto ejection and fine the shit out of them.  If it's not, then let them play ball.  It is a contact sport after all.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Just don't know how you can police it other than using your judgment on each individual play as to the intent of the hit.  It's impossible to make some hard and fast rule about where you can hit someone because everyone's flying around and going full speed during a play. A DB can be can be closing on a receiver trying to make a form tackle, facemask in the chest and drive through, but the receiver may duck at the last second and it becomes helmet to helmet.  A lot of crap goes on with the players being as big and fast as they are now.  I think you just have to view each hit as to whether or not someone was really tring to injure another player.  Otherwise, let em' go at it.

This whole thing just reminds me of the UGA player being flagged for hitting that OSU receiver too hard. The NFL is a bunch of grown ass men playing a violent sport. I'm all about throwing a flag for an intentional helmet-to-helmet hit, but are they really going to flag guys because the ref thinks he hit a WR too hard? Hitting a WR hard is part of strategy, imo. You want to knock the piss out of them any chance you get.  You keep knocking the piss out of them every time they touch the ball, and some of them will want to start dropping balls because they're anticipating getting blasted. That's just part of the game.

Egg-Zak-Ree.  If you don't want to get hit, don't play WR.
