Recently retired Glen Coffee arrested for having concealed weapon
By Chris Chase
When former San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee(notes) retired from the NFL this summer at the age of 23, he said it was because God told him to leave football and enter the ministry. He didn't mention whether or not he was supposed to accept his higher calling while carrying an automatic pistol.

Coffee was arrested in Florida on Friday morning for carrying a concealed firearm, according to TMZ. Police found the weapon cocked in his center console during a traffic stop.

The former NFL player had been pulled over for speeding in his 2008 Cadillac and was soon discovered to be driving a car without insurance or registration. When police searched the car before it was to be towed, they found the loaded weapon.

God called him to pop a cap in all dem sinnas...  He knew somebody would show up wanting that signing bonus back.  He was gonna smoke dat fool.
This is funny on so many levels, due to how bammers were singing his praises for being "such a great man of God, turning his back on all that money!"  "What a great display of character!"  Just another bammer thug.  In your face Jay Barker!!!   :classic:

It could be something as simple as he let his permit lapse, or had a permit in California and it isn't reciprocal in Florida. I mean, if he was robbing a liquor store, then sure he's a thug. I would like to hear a little more before I pass judgement. I forgot to renew my permit on time once and was expired by a little over a week and the cop that pulled me over was pretty cool about it, since he could have arrested me for it. Does that make me a thug?

I thought the reason you weren't a real police officer is because your wife wouldn't let you carry a gun?  I guess the real reason is you couldn't do the 25 push ups...

Anyway, it always cracks me up that guys like this will say they have to pack heat because how dangerous their "hood" is...  MOVE!!!  You had to have banked some cash from the NFL.
If I ever felt like I needed to have a cocked gun on me at all times, either I am doing something I shouldn't be or I am allowing myself to be in an environment where other people are doing something they shouldn't be.  Simple as that.

I'm gonna have to take a different approach on this one. One thing that seems to happen when someone in his position comes out and says what Glen says puts himself on and island. He didn't just come out say he felt he needed to retire, he said he felt like God was leading him in a different direction. We all know the media isn't necessarilly God friendly, so when something comes up like it has with Glenn, you better believe the light will be on him full blast. I personally don't put Glenn Coffee in the same category as Sherman Williams, Jimmy Johns or DJ Hall. As a matter of fact, this whole recent event with Hall probably makes it worse on Coffee especially around here. It seems more to me that Glenn wasn't keep up with his stuff, like licenses, and got busted for it.

There danger in other place besides the hood, and it's your God given right to protect yourself, and your Constitutional right to carry a gun.   All the "bammer thug" arguments and pokes aside, at worst, in this case, Coffee was merely caught without proper permit.   And yes, that's illegal.  That said, when I was a cop, if I ran across a gun on a person that didn't have a permit, as long as they weren't up to no good WITH the gun, they didn't get charged.  For instance, several DUI arrests netted guns when the car was searched.  The driver with no permit.  The gun was safely secured in the car, and they weren't robbing and raping folks.  I didn't pile on with a "pistol without a permit" charge.  I held the gun until they came back to claim the gun with a valid pistol permit.  If they were carrying drugs, or up to no good using the gun, different story.

Cops are different today...they hit you with every charge they can.  They hammer you.  Bottom line is, if he was just carrying and hadn't gotten the proper permit for FL, then I think it's BS....besides the fact that I don't really like having to be permitted to carry in the first place.   However, it is the law, and you're supposed to have one, disagreement or not, or risk this type of arrest.  However, this is a far cry from dealing drugs, assault, domestic violence, etc. Cops use no discretion anymore.

Now, let me put my "Auburn fan on the net" hat back on...Coffee is a typical bammer thug.  Dumbass, lying, pretending to be a preacher...move if it's that dangerous to where you don't have to carry a gun.

Why would an evangelist need a firearm?

To instill fear?  That's not what Jesus taught.  To protect oneself from persecutors?  To experience persecution is to experience gain - at least, that's what taught in the new testament.

Granted, we can't by any meritable means judge his salvation or his commitment to Christianity.  However, when Glen Coffee elevated himself as being above football due to his faith, he put himself on a pedastal, which is also something the new testament discusses.

I wondered after his announcement why he didn't stay in football to be a witness to those guys.  My team chaplain in high school played in the NFL and got out because the guys around him were sinners.  Why not stay in to show them that Jesus is the way to true happiness as opposed to women, money, pride, etc?

I carry a loaded gun in my car at all times, and have a loaded gun in the house. Does that mean I'm automatically doing something I shouldn't be, or that I'm somewhere I shouldn't be? No. Criminals don't play by the same rules we do.

I really don't know why he felt like he needed a firearm but I can tell there a lot of pastors and preachers that do. Maybe its demographics or it being in the South, I don't know. I agree with your statement as far as what is taught but I really don't see any difference in him carrying a pistol versus any other Christian

This is what I was meaning in my post. Him coming out and saying why he was retiring from football being that of following his Faith. This in itself illuminates itself in the modern society and there will be some Joe out there that feels the need to make an example of him. I would be willing to bet that his reason for going to public was his felt need to confess Christ and be honest.

Good question but only they can truly answer that question. There are many professed Christians in professional sports that do not retire due to a calling and they feel free to do so. Some, feel the need to go a different direction.

Nothing in the Bible preaches against defense of self, your loved ones, or property.  NOTHING.  In fact there are verses condoning it.

Still not sure how Coffee "put himself ABOVE football" or on a pedistal, by leaving it for his stated reasons of believing God had other plans for him or that it wasn't where he was supposed to be.

And, don't know how anyone can say WHAT Coffee should have done with his Christian calling, other than God and Coffee, or why anyone would feel the need to question his Christianity or his calling because he didn't choose to stay in or around football becaue THEY thought he should.
