I think Smart would be a fan favorite as a head coach target, but again, I think the administration will want to go with somebody proven. If asked, I'm sure Smart would go. The only thing(s) that might come into play with that is how many years down the road is that, how many years does Saban have left at that point, and would Alabama offer Smart a head coach in waiting position?

As a brand new head coach, where do you want to make your debut? A place stocked with NFL talent, perennial contender, and things setup the way you like it already? Or somewhere you are going to have to totally rebuild from the ground up? It all comes down to the timing, imo.

Objectively, if I am Kirby - I stay put. Him and Saban (along with McElwain) have something good at Bama. As much as I hate to say it, they have a well oiled machine. As well oiled as any in CFB right now. Kirby might get a nice raise out of it if he plays the cards in a correct fashion. I would not want to walk into the mess that is UGA right now.

That is some funny stuff. Although, I have to say that I'm blown away by the Texas reactions. Really? One sub par first half of a season and these guys are calling for his ass? With the climate of sports today and the what have you done for me lately mentality, I can see the UGA unrest because a pattern seems to be developing and it's deteriorated into Auburn's 08' season. But the Longhorns have been part of the elite in college football for a long time now and played for the MNC a few short months ago. Fire Mack Brown???

They're top 4 or 5 in terms of states with most NFL talent.

They're not too far from South Carolina or Tennessee.

They don't have to compete too much with GA Tech in recruiting as GA Tech has very high academic standards.

They are close to Atlanta.

They have the money to build state of the art facilities.

It's silly that Georgia hasn't had a run like Florida or Alabama. They have the tools to dominate the college football world. Mark Richt, though a good coach, isn't the cutthroat "I must win a national championship or bust" guy they want.

I wouldn't call Richt great either, but it's not like UGA has had runs in the past...Richt has pretty much been about what UGA has always been.

Also, while I thought he shouldn't be fired this year, I'm backpedaling on that because I think with UF not up, and with UT down...if they strike while the iron is hot, they may be able to get the right "cut-throat" guy in there. And, Richt has, like so many at around the 10 year mark, lost his edge. It's too much of a grind to keep up with the Jones for 20 years in the SEC, and they all relax at some point. Richt's career at UGA is strikingly similar to Tubs run at AU.
