I Found This Interesting...
« on: September 17, 2010, 11:22:04 AM »
Slow day, the day before Game Day. Desperate for discussion material. I present this entry from a northern blogger.

Quote
Is ESPN Using GameDay to Promote the SEC?
eptember 16th. 2010, 11:45am

ESPN signed an enormous deal with the SEC in 2008. The first three destinations for GameDay – the Georgia Dome, at Alabama and at Auburn – have been SEC affiliated. Conspiracy talk, unsurprisingly, has infiltrated Internet message boards. Could the WWL be using its pre-game show as a tool to build up the intensity and importance of the SEC brand among fans and, more crucially, voters? It’s plausible, but probably not the case.

GameDay chose #16 Auburn playing an unranked Clemson over Iowa vs. Arizona, both ranked. Unless they are going to Boise State, the most plausible destinations next week would be at Auburn again against South Carolina or at LSU who is hosting West Virginia. It’s plausible that Erin Andrews and Co. won’t congregate north of the Mason-Dixon line until Week Seven, when Ohio State goes to Wisconsin and Iowa visits Ann Arbor.

It’s easy to cry conspiracy, but there are logistics to consider. ESPN is a business.  Promoting the biggest games they show is natural. Until proven otherwise, the SEC is the dominant conference. Three different teams have won the last four national titles.  That has only become more apparent with USC’s downturn.  There’s also Herbstreit. He is commenting on a game, this week the Auburn vs. Clemson game. It’s more convenient to have him in Auburn than try to fly him East from Tucson.

Moreover, if ESPN had a sinister agenda, it would show up in past years. It doesn’t. Here are the conference host breakdowns for the last three years.

2009: SEC (4), Non-AQ (3), Big Ten (2), Big 12 (2), Pac 10 (2), ACC (1)
2008: SEC (7), Big 12 (5), Big Ten (1), Pac 10 (1), Non-AQ (1)
2007: SEC (4), Big 12 (4), Big Ten (2), Pac 10 (2), ACC (1), Non-AQ (1)

The 2008 season sticks out. There’s a reason for that. ESPN focused almost exclusively on showcasing the best game. Five SEC teams – Florida, Georgia, LSU, Auburn and Alabama – and five Big 12 teams – Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State – were ranked in the Top 11 playing in a GameDay game. The Pac-10 hosted game was USC (1) vs. Ohio State (5) and the Big Ten matchup was Penn State (3) vs. Ohio State (9). Last season ESPN seemingly made a concerted effort to be equitable. They went to BYU, to TCU and to Air Force. They played at non-standard AQ destinations, Boston College and Arizona.  Neither motive is nefarious.

ESPN has the power to manipulate the college football landscape in favor of the SEC. Considering the resources at their disposal, it has been their restraint that has been remarkable. Imagine FOX placed in a similar position. ESPN is a dictatorship, but, in most cases, it has been surprisingly benevolent.

Wonder if it might be more of a logistics/money decision, to move all the Gameday stuff from Tuscaloser to Auburn instead of half way across the fucking country.

I will tell you exactly what it is.  Cameron Newton.  Everyone wants to see him play because he is a superstar.  No lie, it's just like how it was with Tebow at Florida.

I came to this realization when I was watching the Miami Ohio State game last weekend and the announcers during the game were talking about how Terrel Pryor was talking about Cameron Newton during an interview.  That is big time.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "Guys don't mind hitting Michael Vick in the open field, but when you see Cam, you have to think about how you're going to tackle him. He's like a big tight end coming at you."

Okay, brief hijack.  I've heard a lot on this board and talk shows etc. around the State about how Cam is running too much and the fear of getting him hurt and so forth.  Did anyone actually watch Miami/OSU?  Have you watched many OSU games.  Pryor IS their offense.  He runs constantly on designed roll outs where he can pass or run.  He was frickin' hammering Miami defenders at the first down marker on several occasions.  The guy is 6'6" and about 20 pounds lighter than Cam and he can't be brought down in the backfield.

Another Big 10 guy put on a show Saturday as well. Denard Robinson, while much smaller, rushed the ball 28 times I believe.  He also throws it pretty well.  The QB for Cinicinnatti, Callaros, is their biggest running threat.  Vince Young never did much running and on and on.  Cam could get hurt. Hell, every player out there could get hurt on any given play.  The guy is a force.  I say let him do his thing and don't slow him down for fear of injury.

Don't know what Malzahn actually has in mind for Cam.  I suspect he wants a passing QB that is a real threat to run too.  A coach has to decide what he's going to be and do with regard to his philosophy and personality.  If Malzahn is going to run Cam, then he has to do so, and not worry about what might happen.  Just like Spurrier has obviously chosen to rider a certain horse named Lattimore until he carries him to the promise land, gets hurt, or breaks down.  It's what you have to do as a coach.   I don't know yet exactly which way Malzahn has decided to go, and could be Malzahn isn't completely sure yet.

I still like the traditional snaggle better.  In past years messing with the snaggle has produced poor results.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
