Thoughts - Week 1

Thoughts - Week 1
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:11:32 AM »
Auburn

- The offense is going to be the most dynamic offense in the country.  Downhill running with Cam, Dyer, and McCalleb.  Deep balls to Carr, Adams, and Zachary.  Underneath screens to Fannin.  I can't wait to see how much better it is once the tight ends get involved AND when Trovon Reed gets healthy.

- Cameron Newton will be a Heisman candidate next year.  It might take too long to get him national recognition this year, but going into next year, he'll have Charlie Ward-type stats.

- We need a new defensive coordinator.  Ted Roof just isn't working.  We said all last year that it was depth and injuries.  Well, the reports have been that the injuries were back 100%.  I think that was evident last night as Savage and Etheridge were the most physical players on our team.  We know from recruiting and players with "a year in the system" that our depth should be at a high enough quality to make adequate substitutions throughout the game.  However, last night was the exact same thing as last year.  Soft defense.  Poor tackling.  No subs.  We didn't sub guys in until we had a comfortable lead in the mid 3rd quarter.  No more excuses.  Ted Roof isn't getting it done.

- Anyone else see Chizik chewing out Roof on the sideline?

- Our special teams are finally...knock on wood...at the level of an SEC team.  I feel like we actually have a punt returner that I don't have to worry about.

Alabama...

- Julio Jones had one of the most ridiculous catches I've seen in a while.  It's the fact that he used his left hand that made it so special.

LSU...

- You shouldn't be breathing a sigh of relief.  You don't let a team with 9 starters out almost beat you.  North Carolina should have been demoralized, yet you allowed them to show heart and intensity.  You became soft when the game could have been put away.  You jumped up and down to celebrate your comfortable lead like you knew you would get, and then you let your opponent punch you in the mouth for 15 minutes.  You = Les Miles.

- North Carolina would have won that game easily if they had their starters.

Oklahoma...

- I've been saying it for months: Oklahoma is overrated.  They should not be a NC pick by anyone.  They went 8-5 last year because Landry Jones wasn't very good.  Well, it was 31-24 late in the 4th quarter, and it took a very athletic interception to put Utah State away.

Florida...

- Your team has happened before.  There's always a team each year that's loaded with talent and knows it's going to be very very good.  However, you have just a few issues that will keep you from doing so.

1.  Center-QB exchange.  Shotgun or not, you can't play football if you can't hike the footbal to the quarterback.  And I'm sorry about whatever excuses you have, you recognize that issue in spring and have it fixed by fall.  And don't tell us that you'll get it worked out by next week.  Obviously 6 months of practice didn't help it.  It's not going to get any better.

2.  Ball security - Your running backs fumble.  A lot.  And constantly giving the ball to your speedy and tiny scat backs is going to cost you.  Tebow was your power man.  Who's the big hoss eating up clock and yards this year?  Moody?  I didn't see them out there in the 1st half.  Not good IYAM.

3.  Defense - The talent and speed will outmatch most teams, but good teams (Alabama, Georgia) will exploit the mistakes.

Ole Miss...

- BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Final Thought...

- This has the potential to be one of the greatest weeks of this season.  We get an Auburn game in the middle of the week, and then there's good matchups on Saturday from 11am until midnight.

- However, it has the potential to be bittersweet.  Miss State pulled their starters early as they won 49-7 in their opener.  Our defense was gassed trying to shut down a Sun Belt offense.  Dan Mullen is a good coach.  He's going to make a name for himself somewhere soon.  He almost did it against LSU and Florida last year.  Let's hope he doesn't do it this week, this Thursday in Starkville.

One little thing I have seen mentioned very little about the D is that Stevens was out. One of your leaders and best tacklers - OUT. But thats no excuse for the way the D played as a whole. Roof's seat SHOULD be getting a little warm.

Mario -  seen enough. Let Dyer and McCalebb carry the load. Need an H Back? Eric Smith.  Mario is a Sr who has been around a LONG LONG time. Fumbles shouldn't be an issue for a guy like him against Arky State.

LSU - a fucking joke.

Kansas and Ole Miss - an even bigger fucking joke.

Little worried about MSU this weekend.

I've got a few thoughts.

1. Great write up Town.

2. Defense played a vanilla/ base defense.  Okay, BUT!... there is zero excuse for the piss poor execution, poor tackling and an absolute inability to defend the passing game in the 15 yard middle of the field areas.  Vanilla, or complex, we can NOT defendthe passing game.  Stevens being out is one thing but our linebackers and line did a decent job of stuffing the running game.

3. Cam Newton is going to be a special national force for Auburn.  I've NEVER seen a physical presence at QB at Auburn like Newton.  Ever.  No, not even Campbell.

4. Mike Dyer is a stud, and as advertised.   My guess is that you'll see Fannin go back to his receiving role with McCallebb and Dyer looking competent.

My Thoughts:

War Eagle!!! was wrong Dyer looked every bit as good as Lattimore and better.  Lattimore wears Michael Dyer PJs to bed.

JR4AU was wrong Cam Newton is a gamer of what could be epic proportions.

Yours truly was wrong, our defense looked like shit, while we did seem to be aggressive, poor tackling and long pass plays were again the theme for the night. I got half an ass cheek on the fire Ted Roof wagon....get it together Teddy!

You guys are right one time with what you are saying. I really couldn't agree anymore. I would love to see some video of Chizik getting all over Roof like mentioned in another thread. There are no excuses for the poor tackling. I hate to admit it but RWS was right about some comments he made a couple weeks ago about Roofs defenses playing for the big hit and not the ball. I say that too much last night. Also, sloppy play in the second half right outta the gate, holy freakin cow! GH, if we had of stayed any longer, either I would have pissed off the little kid behind us or........oh hell you know!

Cameron Newton is the SHIT!!!!!!!!! This dude is my new man crush. Dyer, well, him too.

Oh yeah, what about some Jessel Curry? This kid around 800 tackles last night.

Q
Do we qualify for a tax credit if we get the new Roof?

A
Yes and the new Roof comes with a lifetime warranty.
All you need to do is call Gene Chizik. He will assist you in all of your Roofing needs.
Gene has been in the Roofing business for over two decades and can match you with a Roof that's right for you.

Gene says: If it leaks...you obviously need a new Roof.
Powerful stuff.

some of y'all should go back and watch the replay...we tackled A Lot better than last year and we Subbed throughout the entire ball game, not just in the 3rd Qtr...#33 Jessel Curry played a shit load, plus if he had around 800+/- tackles...then, how does that explain our lack of tackling? Also, #13 Craig Sanders is a fuckin' tackling machine.

I guess ASU's WRs, QB, and RBs just fell down all night, but the first Auburn defender to touch them got the credit for the tackle.  All along I thought Darren Bates nailed #43, almost causing a fumble...I guess he was already on his way to the ground when Bates hit him.

Our lack of tackling was obvious last year on the Kickoff Coverage...Aside from the one long return, how many tackles did we miss?

I saw all of the young bucks playing their asses off. I also noticed that the tackling was an improvement over last season. I caught all of the positives,  (or as many as I could)

THIS TEAM HAS A CHANCE TO BE SCARY- GOOD IF ROOF GOES TO MAN

That's my statement! It isn't a personal attack and I don't single out individuals to criticize. But this team has some lock down corners that need to be turned loose. Roof will not have to "feel" he has to blitz every down if he does this. Bad angles, poor technique and stupid penalties occur when you play like you're down two scores instead of up by three. We now have ample depth, that is not an excuse. Yes we need some maturing but that will happen naturally. Special teams was an improvement no doubt about it, and there were some breakdowns which were expected in an opener.

I say let the corners maul the opposition as they were recruited to do. Stop the mamby-pamby we play nice poop and abuse some receivers.

The offense is already better but the corners are being stymied by playing in a prevent mode which will certainly lead to failure and I think the team deserves a better shake than that.

Defense looked super soft.  They just do not flock to the ball like our past great defenses, however I didn't notice poor tackling.  The schemes we are playing suck.  D-line cant get pressure on the QB.  It will be a long year if Chizik, does not step in.  Roof's seat is not hot, its on fucking fire.

Offense looked good still some things to work out.  Not used to relying on the offense to keep us in the game...............looks like I better get used to it.

There are 18-20 seniors on this roster most whom are starters/ or are platooned regularly out of the 24 total.
Newton looks to have a phenomenal season ahead of him. Dyer will become a force. But there is no guarantee that Newton will not test the waters at season's end. I know hardly anyone can understand an athlete leaving such a wonderful place and depriving us of another year but this guy can probably choose his time.
The time is now for this team to make it's mark which is why I deplore Roof's philosophy, strategy or whatever one wants to call it.
Everything Auburn does or fails to do will reflect in overall coaching, recruiting and a few Juniors with big -time talent deciding to leave or stay.
And giving ground is not what Auburn does.
I'm done with the Roof talk and listening for cowbells.

Just got done watching the game again on the DVR at home.  I have to say after watching it, we didn't tackle near as bad as it seemed watching it live.  There was still a little too much leaving our feet, but we seemed to get a hold of, or take better angles during this game.

I'm not happy with the scheme, or the base style "bend and don't break" bullshit, but it wasn't as bad as I thought initially.

I'm willing to chill on the pitchfork throwing until after this next Thursday evening.

Michael Dyer did look good, and Cam is just ridiculous.  His presence in the pocket, or ability to move is great.   I was watching Vince Young from Texas all over again.

And I will relent as well. It's just that I see over 250 yds./ game out of Cam alone, pass first/ run second. We haven't had a game changer like this in quite a while, and I don't want the defense to play soft with such an opportunity to be the talk of college football while starting just inside the top twenty-five.

Dyer is a fast load and hard to get ahold of, different from the long striders that we have had in the past.

And the young defenders like Sanders, Eguae, Curry, Whitaker and Carter are very impressive.

I'll go ahead and echo what Coach Chizik said, Coach Roof and the rest of the Defensive Staff had no clue what style of Offense that ASU was going to run...there wasn't any film on their new OC to go by, hence the feeling out in the better part of the 1st half (the half where they gained most of their yardage).

The 2nd half, ASU's average starting position, on Offense, was around Auburn's 40 yardline with their first two posessions starting inside Auburn's 35 and 30 yardline...that was within the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half.

Ok, I'll be the bammer asshole.  IT WAS ARKANSAS FUCKING STATE.  Chizik was obviously making with the coach speak to keep from throwing his DC under the bus.  On talent alone, 13 points is all Arkansas State should have scored.  That defense was tired, and now they are practicing on a short week.  Auburn should still handle Miss State because they'll probably score 80 points, but that defense didn't look a bit different to me than it did last season.

Until someone on the defensive side of the ball can figure out how to put any type of consistent pressure on the QB, those DBs will be wore out halfway through the second quarter of every game.  To make matters worse, Auburn's offense looks like it may be the fastest scoring offense in football this season, so that defense will be give out by mid season.  And I'm really not trying to paint the defense in a bad light, but fuck, Arkansas State held the ball for 10 more minutes on offense than Auburn did, and that's passing the ball 49 times.  That shit is going to catch up with Auburn quickly.

Lot of assumptions on all of our parts after that one.  One game leaves a lot of room for both sides to debate their sides with plenty of ammo either way.

I'll be glad to see Craig Stevens back.  Word is he could be back by Clemson (according to Rivals mod).

I think the fact that the defense got better in the second half would nix your "tired" statement from this past game.  I certainly didn't see that.  If anything, they got better as the game went on.  JMO...

I'm definitely ready to see what they'll do versus Miss States re-vamped offense.  Should tell us much more.
