Trotter, Green officially get promoted
« on: August 26, 2010, 05:09:52 PM »
Like I said, God I'm awesome, Welcome to AWK Avenue...we don't need no stinkin' skreets.

Quote
Hey everyone.

We have just learned that two of the Tigers’ remaining positional quandaries have been settled.

Coach Gene Chizik said Barrett Trotter has earned the No. 2 quarterback job. The sophomore leapfrogged fifth-year senior Neil Caudle on the depth chart. Redshirt freshman Clint Moseley also was in the mix.

So what happens now with Caudle and Moseley?

“Both of those guys can go in there and do the job,” Chizik said. “(Caudle) is what this place is all about. We have a lot of trust in him. Clint Moseley is a young man who has shown a lot of strides. All four quarterbacks, our plan right now, is to take all four of them” on the road.

So what about right tackle? Glad you asked.

A.J. Greene, a junior, has been named starter at right tackle. He battled with John Sullen and Brandon Mosley for the job. He was one of the team’s more low-profile players during spring drills, but a summer of introspection prompted significant progress.

More to come.

Worst coaching decision ever!!!!!!! Does Cizik even know what shape a football is?  These clowns need to go.  Caudle is clearly the better of the remaining QB's.  AJ Greene...really.

I'll throw in negativity - I don't like the AJ Greene to right tackle move.

It just doesn't "feel" correct.  Like something is off.  Like, we recruited two four star junior college studs to compete for right tackle because we didn't have anyone to play that position.  Like, those two studs couldn't get it done, so we threw in the scrub that at least knows the offense.  Bad vibes, man.

And we need a :Kaos: emoticon.

AJ Green to Right Tackle was a move that should've been made....as was Barrett Trotter as the 2nd String QB.

Roz hasn't been 100% since he arrived.

Mosley is learning the position.

Sullen is also just learning the position and he got slightly injured in the last scrimmage.

Roz is now working at Left Tackle behind Z.

Mosley will continue learning the RT position behind Green.

Sullen, I'm guessing, will move back to Guard behind Isom and/or Berry.

Caudle is the new 4* placekick holder.

Trotter is a better QB than Caudle, he's more mobile and he doesn't aim at the defenders.  I wouldn't have minded seeing Clint Mosley as the backup QB.

Damn. I thought Caudle looked sharper than Cam Newton in yalls A-Day game, for that matter. Not like my opinion counts much, but I was pretty impressed.

Trotter was as good or better than Caudle at A-Day.  JMO...  i think Cam is going to be in good shape as the starter.  Shit, he's barely been allowed to run live yet.

Personally, I think Cam was already figured to be the starter before A-day...I think the reason you say the above was designed that way because they were looking for a number 2.

I thought Trotter looked the best of the 3. Cam hardly threw the ball.

I thought Caudle looked more poised and consistent. But I loved how Trotter goes for the throat. His first inclination is the go for the big play and then drop back down to the shorter routes. That is how you stick the knife in and twist it a little. However, I didn't think he would be as consistent as Caudle this year. Apparently the coaches like the kill shot too. Also, Caudle may just be cruising his last year knowing that he probably won't see the field after Cam won the job. Whatever the reason, I am not as terrified as years before about the QB position.

I think you're right about Cam. I figured they knew he would be starter when his signed. As for Trotter, I like this kid and I do think that if Cam wouldn't have come to Auburn, he would be the starter. This guy is a gamer and reminds me a lot of Tim Tebow in his leadership as a hard nosed field general. This kid has teh brains and the skillz.

That's certainly one way of looking at it, but what I see as significant is that we have these "two four star junior college studs" to add some much needed depth. Greene has apparently been improving dramatically from everything I've read over the last month. Now we have an experienced OL with some studs behind them to back them up. I see that as a good thing.

When you have a new QB, it's beneficial to have an experienced OL to back him up.

It still concerns me that we picked up 2 JC t'fers in Gayden and Mosely and neigher could win the job from a Jr. that's been at Auburn and has, to date, shown very little.   I'm thrilled the light finally came on for Greene, but you don't bring in JCs if you don't expect them to be your starters.

Not sure I agree with that statement.  I would contend that OL is one of the hardest position for a JC guy to come into and beat out someone who has been in the system longer.

Exactly. On top of that, OL is a much more fluid position than say, QB. It's not like those guys won't be seeing the field at all.  Read: DEPTH.

Normally I would agree 100%.  In this case; however, one of the two JC guys has been hurt since the spring game.  Also, the other JC guy was TE that came in undersized for the Tackle position, and is still learning the position to boot.  I somehow expect to see Gayden slowly brought along now at the other Tackle spot to be ready for next season, and Sullen and Mosely backing up the Tackle and Guard spots.

Last Saturday, Greene sure looked the part. He was getting after it in all the drills.  He's beefed up finally above 290.  I imagine he's just been the most consistent of the guys pushing for that spot.

Not sure I agree with that statement.  I would contend that OL is one of the hardest position for a JC guy to come into and beat out someone who has been in the system longer.

Which takes me back to the premise that you don't bring in JC guys unless you feel it's your only option.    You don't bring in JCs to compete, you bring them in with the idea they are the starter at the position you bring them in for...to fill an immediate need.  You bring in Fr. to coach and cultivate for future needs, not JC Jr's.

Look, it's not a major worry, just one of those things that makes me wonder what's up.  May be Greene just decided to get his ass in gear, don't know, but that's the word on da skreets.

OL in this system isn't rocket science.  The RT is asked to do just a few things really.  In the run game he usually double teams with the RG, or is blocking down on the 3 technique, or a LB, or zoning...all standard blocks.  That's not so much a scheme learning curve as technique learning curve.  Leave us not forget too, that these JCs were in for spring practice, and that Greene didn't get but one year under this system, and did so as a back up...so there's not that much of an experience advantage for Greene.  And pass pro...I don't know exactly how Malzahn does his, but from what I've seen on film, the RT is usually one on one with the DE, but also often has help in the way of a back chipping with him.   So, what it comes down to in my estimation, is a guy that was on campus that they originally didn't think should be the #1, has beat out 2 JCs that they brought in to take the job.  Why?  Like I said, don't know...and maybe not a big deal...but it's a concern in my eyes.
