Auburn notebook: Cam Newton says there's more pressure as the starting quarterback

Auburn returns to the practice field this afternoon, and it'll be a video opportunity for the media. Hopefully, we'll have practice video up around 5:30. While we wait, here's the Auburn notebook that ran in the newspapers associated with al.com today:

AUBURN - New Auburn quarterback Cam Newton says his first fall practice with the Tigers has been quite different than his debut last spring.

"I can say that because there's more on my plate being a starting quarterback,'' he said. "You just can't make the same mistakes you make in the spring because everyone's looking at you to make the play and be able to know what everybody's assignment is.''

Players and coaches say Newton has responded this fall. Newton said offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has given him little choice.

"I think Coach Malzahn has put that pressure on me and just to see how I will respond,'' he said.

Newton said he and Malzahn are finding the right mix.

"Coach Malzahn does an excellent job of bending the offense that allows me to perform to my strengths. And if I have a problem, I just go to him and tell him what I don't like. And I tell him what I do like,'' Newton said.

Malzahn said last week he has adapted to Newton, saying the quarterback play will likely look different this season because of Newton's ability to run.

**Auburn took Monday off, but the Tigers will be back on the practice field late this afternoon. The Tigers will practice through Friday and then take Saturday off.

**It might not grab headlines on a daily basis, but coach Gene Chizik says his message to the team has focused on two things.

"Consistency and winning the penalty battle. We've got to what consistent in what we're trying to do, across the board. That message has been pretty clear to our guys,'' he said.

Auburn had 97 penalties marked off last year for a whopping 847 yards. Opponents had 59 penalties for 466 yards.

**Receiver Kodi Burns said he and Newton are working on timing patterns.

"There are a few more routes we have to get down, but as far as overall timing on all the routes, I think we have that pretty much developed,'' Burns aid."`That's what these next two weeks are really about is timing and knowing the guys that are going to be in the game.''

Burns said that's done "whether we have to stay after practice or before practice. It'll be really key.''

Burns, the one-time quarterback, said he's ready for his second year at wide receiver.

"I think I'm physically more fit to play wide receiver because even Coach Malzahn said at I was more explosive at the beginning than the end because I was just worn down. I had never run that much in my life. Playing quarterback, you throw the ball and then you run a little bit. But at wideout, you run pretty much every play, so it wore me down throughout the season, but I think this season I'm prepared to go the full 13, 14 weeks.''

Love hearing The Chin talk about cutting out those penalties.  I promise that doing that one thing will amount to at least 1-2 extra wins.  Anyone recall how many holding penalties Bama had in SEC games last year?  Anyone recall how many wins they had last year?  Conspiracy theories aside, cut the damn penalties in half and we win ball games.

I don't get the Kodi haters.  The kid has had every opportunity to act like a spoiled rotten, prima dona athlete, and instead has done his level best to contribute where he can, and be not only a team player, but team leader.   I very much think he's the epitome of an Auburn man.

I like the kid and think his attitude to be great.  I just don't think he lived up to the 5*'s that he had beside his name coming out of HS.   That's not hating on the kid.  I do think that he can contribute though, although it may not be on the level that Adams, Zachery or some of the others can.

I recall watching Kodi in one of the All-Star games his senior year.  He was deserving of the 5* rating based on what I saw but it was obvious that it was strictly because of his athleticism.  At that level, he was heads and tails above everyone else.  I think you have to look at the evaluation process of the corches and place the blame there.  I think you should be able to tell whether or not a guy can actually throw a spiral and hit the broad side of a barn before you sign him to play QB in this league.  I would never pass on a 5* athlete unless he had issues outside of his talent. However, you have to be straight with him about what you foresee in his future as far as where he can help you and more importantly, you have to know if he can throw a football before you sign him to play QB.

There's the "no poop" statement of the decade!  But there are some out there that have hated on him, even since moving to WR, wanting other younger guys to unseat him in the WR rotation.  I've seen people WANT the kid to fail at the WR position, and WANT him to fail at running the wildcat.  I don't get that.  The kid is an athlete, and has a good attitude.  I want kids like that playing if they can contribute at the level we need.

I guess I should have said it a little better.  I think b/c of that, the disappointment set in and some were bitter towards him after that.  08 made a lot of people bitter and angry.  There are those that truly believed that once Kodi took over for Todd that things would turn around that season and it didn't.  We still sucked and it pissed people off and the automatically relate it to Kodi.

There were a lot of victim's of that 08 season.  Fact is though, we'd seen Kodi the year before, and he'd shown no signs of being a savior even under "normal trying circumstances" much less the fiasco that was TubsFrankFingergate.

Agree, I didn't think he was going to a savior either, but I assume that a lot of people chalked it up to him being a frosh and that he would progress.
