Well...all I could say at lunch today was to quote from Ronald Reagan..."There you go again."
I've been having a heated debate (and mostly one-sided debate against Democrat talking points) for the past three weeks with two of my coworkers (Democrats) and one of my competitors (Dumbass Democrat...but I repeat myself) about the state of the economy lately. So here I was today going to lunch with the same two Democrat coworkers and a supplier's representative who happened to casually mention at one point..."what with the economy being so bad and all"... Well, that particular remark set my Democrat co-workers laughing maniacally at the obvious unspoken phrase "see Jerry...everybody KNOWS how rotten the economy is". Go ahead...laugh it up I thought.
We got to the restaurant and and the supplier began telling us how much his company is expanding with a 200,000 square foot plant addition, a third extrusion press, two new paint lines, etc., etc. I could not bite my tongue any longer. Well it sounds to me like your company is real bullish on the economy! Wow! What with all that expansion for new sales and manufacturing...he, of course, agreed. My co-worker, Democrats said nothing so I continued on..."you know the economy really is not bad at all except for gas prices, a slump in existing home sales, and the Liberal media's sour outlook because they hate President Bush". I continued, "The unemployment rate is lower than it was when Clinton was president (they "revere" Clinton as the greatest economic genius since FDR), the past 7 years has seen the GDP grow a whopping 5 trillion dollars, compared to Clinton's term when it only grew 3.2 trillion during his 8 years in office, budget deficits are on the decline again where they should be, and our particular company is looking at more construction work than we ever have...gee, I suppose the economy really is bad (sarcasm)." Of course none of them said a damn thing. I continued, "if a Democrat was in the White House and everything else was the same as it is now then you would not be able to get away from them saying how great things are despite the high gas prices." Our supplier's rep nodded approval. I then said "I really hope Hillary wins big next Tuesday in Ohio and Texas so the Democrat party will be in turmoil all the way to their convention". That shut them up on the subject.
Anyway, I know there are other factors to consider in the economy. Part of my point in debating them is to proove that it is too complicated a subject to reduce to politically biased, factually incorrect or misleading, talking points...which is what Democrats are good at. It is always the lowest common denomenator with them. As an example, I always get it thrown in my face that Bill Clinton left a surplus and W has left a 9 trillion dollar debt. Yeah, that is a good talking point but it is not entirely correct. Clinton had an Accumulated National Debt too while he was president and the only reason that there was an annual federal budget surplus during the last three years of his presidency is because Newt Gingrich put a stop to rampant Congressional spending.
Along those same lines they also say that the budget deficit skyrocketed while Reagan was president and became a surplus while Clinton was president...to which I reply...well, that is true but Tip O'Neill and his Democrat buddies where spending the hell out of the government during the eighties and Newt Gingrich put the brakes on that irresponsible spending during the nineties...reminding them that was why Reagan wanted the line item veto in the first place to cut earmark spending. And also reminding them that Congress controls the spending...not the executive branch.
Some people just can't hear anything but "DEM-O-CRAT GOOD! RE-PUB-LI-CAN BAD!". And others just go with what they hear on the mainstream media (which we KNOW aren't the least bit biased-sarcasm-are they?).
I know that there are a lot of smart folk on this forum (and I know we touched on this subject in the "Scare Words" thread too)...so I'm curious...what say yall about the state of the economy?
