Scrimmage notes from last night
« on: August 12, 2010, 10:09:40 AM »
Quote
Antonio Goodwin caught two touchdown passes Wednesday night.

# Gene Chizik: “Overall, I thought it was a really good first scrimmage.”

# He said Cam Newton, Neil Caudle and Clint Moseley rotated with the offense. “We’re going to continue to work them all.”

# Chizik: “Our young linebackers did a nice job. Corey Lemonier continues to improve. Jeff Whitaker continues to improve.“

# He said turnovers “weren’t an issue tonight. for the first time tonight, there wasn’t a lot of negative things happening other than the explosive plays, which is a great thing for the offense and obviously not for the defense.”

# Zac Etheridge did not participate in the scrimmage.

# Ted Roof, defensive coordinator, seemed satisfied with the team’s run defense. He was upset about penalties (two offsides calls converted third downs) and some busts in the passing game.

# LB Craig Stevens echoed that sentiment, saying a second year in Roof’s defense has made a big difference in understanding run-defense assignments. Roof said it’s a matter of better fits along the front and taking better angles when pursuing runners.

# Stevens: “You’re always going to give up one or two big plays. You try not to give up any, but overall it’s the response. And I feel like we responded today. Because after the big plays, we responded with a couple of stops and picked it back up on defense. So overall, we need to improve on that, but I think we responded well.”

# WR Emory Blake said what stuck out to him was overall passing efficiency and Antonio Goodwin (pictured), who caught several passes that went for long gains. Mario Fannin said Goodwin scored twice.

# Trooper Taylor on Antonio Goodwin: “I’m telling you, the guy is phenomenal. He can go get the football. He’s not afraid. I know he can probably play on special teams a whole bunch, but it was good to see him live. That was my biggest thing was he put his face in there. He got overwhelmed by some of the bigger guys in the blocking process, but he stuck his face in there and for me that’s big.”

# Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn on Newton: “It was good for him to get the reps. He made some good plays and he made some things that I know he wished he could do better. That’s part of the process. He needs reps. So each scrimmage he’ll continue to get a lot of reps. “

# Fannin on Michael Dyer: “Mike looked good. He’s a quick guy and he’s low to the ground and he can make some people miss too. He looked really good. He’s got to basically keep learning the offense and he’ll get better as the year goes along, too.”

# Pat Dye and, as you see below, Chuck Person were in attendance.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Yeah, I hear that news about the defense and it makes me sigh.  Oh well, I hope it was 2nd or 3rd string defensive players.  We will never know.

Last Thursday, Trotter told Malzahn to basically stick it up his ass after practice because of lack of playing time.  Still pissed over the naming of Cam as the starter.  Isom and Pugh took exception and a scuffle ensued. Trotter wound up with some torn ligaments in his throwing arm.

Okay, I just made all that up.  But it could have happened.

BTDub, I love that pic of Goodwin.  It was in the paper this morning and said that was Chris Davis on coverage.  True freshmen.  The article neglected to say Neiko Thorpe was running 5 yards behind Davis in coverage and that 10 seconds after Goodwin was tackled, Ziemba came in late and speared Davis.

Don't you know, our offense is just that good.  No one can stop us, not even our our own guys.

This is not my team but as a coach this comment here scares me. Who is the number one? Did anyone go to the scrimmage (not sure if you could go) and see if Cam took the majority of snaps? The more reps the better.

In one article, it sounded like Cam got a ton of reps but I'm with ya' on this quote.  However, at the scrimmage I went to last year, they had named Todd the starter.  He would get every other series while the other QB's rotated so I'm assuming they still handled it that way.

Good you caught that too.  My concern was seeing they are still working Caudle, or any other QB with anything other than obligatory 2nd team reps.  The #1 guy  should be getting the lions share, not a rotation in and out.  That worries me.

Also, I wouldn't worry about "busts" in coverage so much as the penalties.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I know spring games shouldn't be the measuring stick, but actually, I was much more impressed with Caudle than Newton. I know Newton has some catching up to do as far as learning the system, adjusting to the speed, etc.....I just thought Caudle looked good. Anyway, I totally agree about the rotation theory. With Caudle as backup, you would think that would make it even more so to give your #1 most of the reps. Sure, you need to develop your third, fourth string guy. Let them develop on the scout team. If you're down to your third or fourth guy, you're probably fucked anyway.
