Fmr Houston Mayor Bill White Disses Obama
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:34:34 PM »
is running for governor as the Democrat against Rick "I Have Great Hair" Perry.

I like White the man and the Mayor (he did a helluva job during Katrina and Ike), dislike his current politics and despise his naming Houston as a sanctuary city, but after this, I gotta give him props...  He is not stupid - he knows that sucking up to Obama in any city other than Austin is a death knell for his candidacy in Texas.

Quote
Bill White, the Democrat running for Texas governor, has a message for President Barack Obama: Call me.

Obama is scheduled to come to Texas for fundraisers on Aug. 9, but White has said he’s too busy to meet with the president.

But he said he’d happily take a call from Obama.

“I’d be available to talk to the president, whoever the president of the United States is, at any time,” White said Friday. “I’m available to talk to anybody by telephone.”

Republican Gov. Rick Perry, eager to associate White with Obama in staunchly conservative Texas, has said he would like to meet with Obama about border violence while the president is in town — a statement widely seen as a political gimmick. Obama is holding private fundraisers in Dallas and Austin and has announced no public events during a trip that is part of a series of fundraisers around the country.

White, the former Houston mayor, has repeatedly criticized the Obama administration on spending, health care, border security and other initiatives. He said Perry wants to tie him to Obama because “he knows that he can’t beat me.”

At a news conference in Austin, White was asked if he would reconsider his decision not to appear with Obama in Texas.

“No, I’m continuing my schedule,” White said. “I’m campaigning for governor of Texas and that means meeting the people of this state and listening to what they have to say.”

Democrats in Texas were planning a pair of fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee in Austin, a liberal enclave, and another in Dallas for Democratic Senate candidates.

Tickets to the high-dollar lunch in Austin start at $5,000 each and go up to $30,400 for a couple to have a photograph with the president. A tentative invitation to the event says “some of the proceeds will remain in Texas to help elect Democrats in Texas, including Bill White as our next governor.”

The ONE was just here in Atlanta on Tuesday for a Dem Fund Raiser and to speak at the Disabled American Veterans Convention but 'King Roy' Barnes, the Democrat (and former Governor) running for the office of Governor again, wisely fled to South Georgia while The ONE was here; his staff said that he had 'prior commitments'.  It was laughably obvious that he wanted nothing to do with *The Kenyan.

*Edit: I should have written 'The Kenyan'.

As well he should. The inner city Atlanta vote will not determine the governor's race here in GA.

I didn't know you lived in Georgia CCT.

It's going to be an interesting election this year; Barnes is popular (again) but the Democrat Party is not.  I'm struggling with the upcoming run off election; Handel can probably get a chunk of the ITP vote but she is not polling well against Barnes and will have some trouble in rural Georgia.  Nathan Deal on the other hand will get no ITP votes but is overwhelmingly popular in rural Georgia and polls outside the margin of error against Barnes...BUT he's, also got some alleged corruption baggage from his Congressional days.

I live right on the AL/GA line near Auburn and remember Barnes the first go round after Zell Miller's successful run. Unless he has changed, seen the light, etc - I wouldn't expect much out of him. I thought he was about a notch below Perdue and they are both about 6 notches below Miller in effectiveness - IMHO.

I'd still think Handel is the one you want for Georgia RIGHT NOW.  She's liberal on the social front but right now thats not a concern. Fiscal responsibility is what is needed. I could careless if she's all for dudes rubbing ding dongs together as long as she is getting people back to work and staying within budget.

You are getting old. We discussed this last year at some point. I am in Cherokee county. And Anyone but Barnes is my motto. I'm with GH on this one. WE need fiscal responsibility and ignore every other issue for the next four years. We need leaders that will veto anything that does not deal with saving money or lives.

If I remember right, I think Tarheel took a sabbatical for a while. It may have been then that we discussed whereabouts.

I just don't see how people of Ga could elect Barnes after his first run as Governor. He was terrible.

I do appreciate your spirited defense, GH!  I guess that I really am getting old because now that CCT mentioned it I do recall the subject of his whereabouts coming up in a thread at some point.

Since you live so close CCT we need to get together for a adult beverage or two sometime and solve the world's problems.  I might even be able to talk GarMan into joining us.

On another subject, just voted this morning in the Run off election here.  It was a tough decision but I decided to vote for Nathan Deal after being a Handel supporter.  At the end of the day, I just don't think that she can beat King Roy this fall.

Thats what is sad about the political process now. You have to vote not for the one you want in the primary but the one you think can best beat the other side. Sad it has to be that way but I think you are right.
