Newton, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's preseason player of the year, skipped Saturday's loss to Bethune Cookman to avoid burning a redshirt opportunity by playing in his fifth game, a source told The Undefeated (https://theundefeated.com/whhw/howard-qb-caylin-newton-wont-play-saturday-may-redshirt/). If he transfers, the star quarterback who is set to graduate in May will have two years of eligibility remaining and could play immediately at another program as a graduate.

“He hasn’t officially made up his mind yet,” the source said of Newton, per the report. “This has caught everyone by surprise. All we know is that he’s not playing this weekend.”

As a sophomore last season, Newton tallied 3,133 yards of total offense and 26 touchdowns, earning the MEAC’s Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Newton, a three-star in the 2017 recruiting class, was rated as the 204th-best prospect in Georgia and 133rd-overall as an athlete, per the 247Sports Composite (https://247sports.com/player/caylin-newton-67427/). He signed with Hampton over offers from Savannah State, Kentucky Christian and Hampton.
